Comment: Last owner had the car for 15years, all MOT's and service history with lots of bills. No mention of the bearing being done so guessing it likely hasn't been done.

EDIT bearing changed this week 12/9/19 It was original and still good at 65000 miles.

comment: IMS Cover/Seal was replaced some years back during a clutch change - bearing is original.

The more we make of this the more it will hurt our pockets

How so? The data collected shows that bearing failure is very rare and nothing to worry about.

Rather than clutter up this excellent data thread it might be better to have this debate elsewhere on another thread.

Just for info .. our garage has done 5 or 6 bearing replacements that im aware of in 4 years .... not that many is it !

5 had no real wear and was done at owner request .. as far as im concerned if people are too scared to drive the car for fear of these packing up then its worth doing ... not something i advise .. i just say have it looked at when doing a clutch .

Only one had a serious amount of play in it and was caught just in time .. but due to small parts of metal in the oil the supplying company wont put a warrenty on it .. they insist on haveing the old bearing back to inspect before covering it .

Reguardless though .. the owner on that 1 car was lucky .

Boxsters seem to be the problem atm though .. one dead one at work and 2 others this year.

Had a Cayman earlier this year with a snapped timing chain .. that was actually due to carbon build up in the bores .. never seen anything like that before.

No details of the above cars but just in case its of any use then i posted it :)
