I've only just finished reading the CLR thread over a couple of evenings.

Looks like I'm about to lose a couple more.... :worship: :thumbs:

MC - I just wanted to give a big thumbs up to the thread. Threads like this is why this place is so good. So thanks for the time taken to upload and update us all on everything you're doing. Very inspiring work, and making me more motivated to crack on with upgrading my own C2.

I managed to get a good look at my own car last night so I can now get a clearer picture of what you are doing and why. It looks like I'm going to have to take into mine for a full strip down at the front and centre. It's not bad but it's been plastered in wax oil, so that'll have to come off. I'd say the sills won't be in great shape when the skirts come off but I'd sort of expect that.
Looks like the brake pipes are all shot.

I do have one question and you, mc seem to be a good man to ask
My splash guards at the front, joining the bumper to the wheel arch liner seem to have been purposely cut, Just below the radiators. Had anyone else had this? Is it for air flow from the rads.

Sorry to hijack btw. This is one thread I'm going to have to go through again when the time comes to get properly stuck in
 
I expect that is what it is for, you can easily for the much larger brake ducts from a turbo or GT3 for peanuts from Porsche, so I probably wouldn't bother.

More work on removing the sound proofing material from the rear shelf today. The awkward piece is done apart from a bit of cleaning up, one more piece to do.



I'm running out of jobs at the moment, the ARBs are due in from the US which will keep me busy for a while as I need to fit them and make up front drop links, I have a little bit of wiring to do, but otherwise I'm working on some electronic jiggery pokery to fix the issue I mentioned previously about the analogue temperature gauge not being scaled correctly, and to give me oil temperature on the dashboard, along with a few other tweaks/upgrades for the instruments.



The bodyshop can't get the car in for the next month, so I'll be turning my attention to retrimming the interior.

Oil temp on the dash sounds like a very good idea! Circuit boards are beyond me though :eek:

Not to worry, when it is finished I will be able to have them produced for anybody who wants one. :thumb:

Do you know, based on the fact you have your dash apart, if there is and calibration adjustment on the oil pressure gauge?

I need to replace my sender as it reads 1 with the engine off, and while searching on YouTube I found a video where a specialist in the USA, connected the pressure sender on a Boxster (with the engine running) to 2 other 911s (all reverses up to each other) and all 3 gauges showed different readings. The point they were proving was that the Boxters oil pressure was fine, the sender was fine, and that it was the gauges that were inaccurate. While I'm sure that my sender is definitely causing a problem, I was wondering how the gauges could become inaccurate.

I'll try dig up the link when I'm back at my desk

Any thoughts?
 
Interesting work on the gauges.......

My 987.1 Cayman has had a lot of work done re gauges, and I would guess (stand to be corrected) that the amount of information being picked up by sensors around the car should be broadly similar to the 996.....

The previous owner fitted a Scangauge, which takes its readings direct from the OBD II port and provides a huge amount of data (much of it uninteresting, but some very useful). The difference between the "true" reading of the water temp vs the dash gauge is fascinating. As commented elsewhere in this thread, the dash gauge is artificially "damped" so that it sits merrily at 80c or a bit above, when the actual water temp on the Scangauge is reading well over 110c !!!!

The car has had an Autofarm 3.7l capacity increase, and they were sufficiently concerned about the elevated operating temperatures on M96/97 oiling issues to fit an external oil temp / pressure gauge fixed to the A-pillar in true ricer style.

It's not an elegant solution, but it is practical. However if there was a neat way to diver this data to the dash display, then that would be very welcome.

RPM, who have done some of the more recent work on the car are keen to build a bespoke oil temp/pressure gauge which would fit in the bezel for the somewhat redundant Sportchrono clock on the dash-top. Clearly that won't be much use for a 996, but perhaps something more OE could be constructed ?

I'm surprised how little of this important information is provided to the driver (the 987.1 doesn't even have any sort of oil pressure gauge in the dash) , and how dumbed-down it is in these cars.........
 
Awful lot neater/more OEM/less ricer to make the water temp gauge do double duty, so it can display either water or oil temp depending on what the driver wants to see. Really could have been how Porsche designed it from the outset.
 
There are no tweakers for the other gauges, but my test set is from a boxster so no oil pressure. When finished I will be able to externally view/log oil pressure and temperature readings via CAN or RS232, I can get a sensor characterised if I can't find the spec.

I've been away for a week or so, so not much progress. I have however got around to adjusting the handbrake. It is fitted with a temporary old handbrake so that my newly trimmed one doesn't get all dirty. This is how it is adjusted.



I am also temporarily fitting the drivers seat so that somebody can sit in the car to steer and brake when it is pushed to the bodyshop.
