Was away for three weeks and the battery was totally dead in my 996.1 C2S Tipronic (2001).

Based on previous history, looks like it has been through a number of batteries - previous owner installed a Platinum Prestige 80 AH, 800 CCA, type 110 – flooded wet - Dimensions: Length 317mm Width 175mm Height 175mm

Possible replacements are

Varta Silver Dynamic F18 Car Battery, UK Part Code: 110
80 Ah, 800 CCA, 175x175 around £90

S5 010 Bosch Car Battery 12V 85Ah Type 110 S5010

Can I fit a 190mm high battery?
This would open up 80 Ah AGM batteries.

Are AGM suitable for a 996?

Car is OK after a week, but can get harder to start after that. Any thoughts on previous tracker(s) that might be installed?

Thanks!

The Bosch S5 is a good choice. Should cope for longer than a couple of weeks.

Thanks! That's still a 175mm high unit as far as I can see.

The front trunk light has burned out and when I replaced the bulb, no light. I think the microswitch isn't working in the lock.

Would figure based on other wear items, as I've had to replace one full door lock assembly (driver side), and the mciroswicthes on the other side to stop the horn beeping on lock / fix window drop.

I was getting a new battery for the wife's exeo today and just had a look at the batteries in both. Going by google, the 996 should use an 096. Is this right? It's just the one in mine is a 3017 iirc and it's massive. I was just looking at options for a smaller one today for a little weight saving

Guessing from your part number, the previous owner has fitted a Yuasa 12v 90Ah 740A Car Battery YBX3017 (58827) which is:
LxWxH: 353 mm x 175 mm x 175 mm
Ampere-Hour Capacity at 20hr rate Ah: 90Ah
Cold Cranking Performance (Amps) SAE/EN1: 740

The Yuasa datasheet says:
Capacity (20-hour) 90Ah
Cold Cranking Amps (EN1) 800A
Mean Weight with Acid 21.2kg
So not sure what your actual CCA is.

As far as I can tell the 996 can take any of three widths of battery, with the widest battery requiring a nut to be added under the tray.

It sounds like you have a 017 (UK) size, which is the widest possible?

I'm deducing that Porsche may (?) have used the 019 size for the widest battery which was optional equipment.

I think 017 is similar but lower Ah - not sure why this was fitted rather than a 019.

The 017 / 019 dimensions are similar to a US Group 49 battery I think.

For the narrowest battery:
Type 096 (or Type 100)
- not for me as I want more than 74 Ah. People seem to have fitted with no issues.
-lightest option?
Not sure of fitment based on height - only the type 100 Bosch is 175mm high. Other brands vary in height for same Type which is rather confusing.

S5 008 Bosch Car Battery 12V 77Ah Type 096 S5008
Technology Wet
Capacity (C20) 77 Ah
CCA (EN) 780 A
Length 278 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 190 mm
Weight: 18.60kg

S5 007 Bosch Car Battery 12V 74Ah Type 100 S5007
Technology Wet
Capacity (C20) 74 Ah
CCA (EN) 760 A
Length 278 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 175 mm
Weight: 17.80kg

S5 A08 Bosch AGM Car Battery 12V 70Ah Type 096 S5A08
Technology AGM
Capacity (C20) 70 Ah
CCA (EN) 760 A
Length 278 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 190 mm
Weight: 20.40kg

For the "middle" width battery:

I'm still unclear if a 190mm height battery is OK. If not, the 175mm high Bosch S5 010 (UK size 110) has 85 Ah and 800 CCA and probably lighter than your 017 - less capacity but more cranking amps.

KNOWN TO FIT:
S5 010 Bosch Car Battery 12V 85Ah Type 110 S5010
Technology Wet
Capacity (C20) 85 Ah
CCA (EN) 800 A
Length 315 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 175 mm
Manufactured Weight (kg) : 19.6 OR Weight: 20.10kg (depending on source - maybe this is "with acid" or shipping weight)
This is also referred to as Part Number: 110/115

If you are OK spending more, I'm strongly considering the AGM Bosch, but it is 190mm high and 80 AH, 800CCA

S5 A11 Bosch AGM Car Battery 12V 80Ah Type 115 S5A11
Technology AGM
Capacity (C20) 80 Ah
CCA (EN) 800 A
Length 315 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 190 mm
Weight: 22.50kg

---
For the widest battery:
NO IDEA IF THESE WILL FIT! Higher than your existing, but people in the US seem to fit something similar.?

S5 013 Bosch Car Battery 12V 100Ah Type 019 S5013
Technology Wet
Capacity (C20) 100 Ah
CCA (EN) 830 A
Length 353 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 190 mm
Manufactured Weight (kg) : 22.6 or Weight: 23.20g (maybe shipping weight?)

S5 A13 Bosch AGM Car Battery 12V 95Ah Type 019 S5A13
Technology AGM
Capacity (C20) 95 Ah
CCA (EN) 850 A
Length 353 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 190 mm
Weight: 26.40kg

911tip you've certainly put a bit of thought into that. I'm just gona leave it as it is and possibly go for a small race type battery when the time comes for a change. My car hardly sees daylight and I have a smart charger there so it'll be ok. I'm planning on refreshing the underside, at the front at least, and sorting the suspension. After that I may possibly be going for some weight saving but not sure if I could really be bothered with that route.

Great info on the batteries :thumb:

Just a quick update.

I found that the existing "Lion" (cheap) 80Ah battery was OK after 4 days, but unable to start the car after 8 days, so I bought an AGM Bosch.

S5 A11 Bosch AGM Car Battery 12V 80Ah Type 115 S5A11
Technology AGM
Capacity (C20) 80 Ah
CCA (EN) 800 A
Length 315 mm
Width 175 mm
Height inc. terms 190 mm
Weight: 22.50kg

I also had a battery drain test done (with old battery). Strangely, this tested OK (80% capacity) - although it was very dead after I was away for nearly 4 weeks.

The drain test showed a drain for about 11 mins (pulsing every 4 secs) but this dropped to around 40-50mA (0.04A) and stayed this low for an hour. I think this suggests there is no obvious parasitic drain.

So hoping new battery will sort the issue...

I bought the cheapest 096 battery from Tayna.co.uk in September 2015

So 4.5 years ago.

Cost £41

096 Powerline Car Battery 12V 72Ah

Car is used regularly (commute twice a week at the moment). Fired up outside instantly in the depths of the freeze the other week (-5 or 6).

If you have an old tracker fitted it likely has a dead battery that may be draining the main battery, I removed one fitted to mine. running a battery down will kill it in short order. Disconnect the battery if you cant find the source of the drain and you are leaving the car for a period.

Not a bad approach at all! Certainly cost effective.

If I have a tracker installed, what current / duty cycle would I expect to see do you think?
