has anyone done this?
What are the upsides & downsides?
Does the older car still feel as good around the twisties?
Im in a dilemma as i now have 10K to 'spend' do i wait & spend it on a 997 engine rebuild when or if it goes bang or trade it in now & spend that 10K on upgrading to an older turbo?
The only thing that put me off getting a turbo in the first place is that i already have a old 4WD Turbo car (Escort Cosworth) & its not brilliant through the bends unlike the C2S that is brilliant & love driving it.
Your thoughts please.

Find one for sale and have a test drive. There is plenty that can be done to the suspension to tune it up and make it perform better of you are that way inclined. If you really want to you can convert to 2wd without much fuss.

I don't think I could go back from a 997 into a 996, the interior is too old in comparison.

As Mister Corn has already said, much can be done to perk a 996T chassis up. For what it's worth, places like Centre Gravity and Fearnsport all rate the older car as being a better drive.

The turbo will feel heavy compared to your 997, this can be massively improved by fitting RSS engine mounts and having a pointy geo, even more so if you have a good remap and fit a lighter exhaust. The combination of the above unlocks huge potential in the car for not much extra outlay.

In totally standard form with a factory geo, the car will not be shown in its best light, but keep an open mind. Oh, forgot to say one thing; they are very quick

MC and Dynomike speak a huge amount of sense.

I ran a 996 turbo as a daily driver for 3 years, covering 46k miles in the process. Moving to it from a 996.1 C2 I expected it to be stodgy in comparison. The reverse was true. It was a remarkably capable machine right out of the box. A map and suspension work by CG will make it as capable as a standard 997.1 turbo.

When I had mine on the Alpine Circuit at Millbrook the instructor helped me see just what it could do. They really are amazing machines.

When I moved to a 997.1 turbo for the first few months I thought I'd made a mistake, so little was the bar raised.

There's a lovely looking one in RSJ just now which is worth a look. Another manual one in Ashgoods. As others have said definitely worth a test drive
