Targa Roof Repair

Hi guys and gals.

So I think my targa roof is in need of some TLC.

The roof is slow to slide back, often stopping half way, and the same sliding it closed.

Also, I think the drainage is blocked as it is a bit damp in the back.

I'm expecting this to be an horrifically expensive job, but can anyone recommend any where trusted who can do the job? And any idea of costs I should be looking at?

Depending on how handy you are with basic car repairs you can clean it up and lubricate the roof yourself and clean the drain holes.

I have a targa and followed the threads on here to clean the drain holes (using compressed air in a can) and also then cleaned out the runners after pulling back the curtain that covers them, then sprayed high quality long lasting non sticky silicone spray.

I add a bit of silicone once a year and it works better than ever, never sticks and is quick

A fellow 996 friend of mine has a Targa and Precision Porsche did his roof earlier in the year (Demort actually did the work). I understand as well that Northway might be able to assist though there aren't many trusted specialists who'll take the job on as it takes a couple of days to do and at times needs several people to assist and you need them to have experience of working on the roof system.

The cost of your repairs will depend on what they find when they take it apart as some of the parts will undoubtedly have worn out and they should check/clear all your drain holes as they take the roof completely out - I'm sure Demort will list some pics at some point of what's entailed. My friends roof now works better than it ever has and Precision gave a minimum estimate for the work and an upper figure (in case they needed to replace certain more expensive parts) and I think came in towards the lower figure though speak with them directly.

I'm seem to recollect that maintaining a fully operational roof is an art itself (again Demort's your man on thus).

happy to give it a go - given the weather, I'm keen to try and keep her dry as best as possible and as quickly as possible.

Below are some pics. It is this side of the car that is damp. the "curtain" is wet on this side, whereas the other side is dry, making me think that I have a particular problem on this side of the car.

any advice on how to clean it out, lube and clean drainage would be very welcome.

Give the roof a good clean and keep it lubed. If yours is letting water in where you show it is most probably the B pillar drain that is blocked.

See my thread in 996 FAQ http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=99352

thanks chap - just ran out to my drive and followed your thread...

that's what I was able to 'milk' out from the hose. YUK!. without any compressed air, I reluctantly put my mouth around it and gave it a good few blows.. and could hear the air coming from the other side.

tonights wet weather will soon show if this has worked or not.

Quick question... does the hose just sit there loose.. and my that i mean I know it has the clip and cable tie, but does the hose just pour the water into the chanel, or is it ment to drain into another hose?

This has DIY written all over it. Looks like you're on the right track with the threads on here, deMort would also undoubtedly give a few pointers if he hasn't already.

I'd sooner nail my testis to a burning building than give up a simple job like this and spank a load of cash in doing so :bandit:

Long post i did about Targas a while back is here ...

http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=116450

If you have water at the rear then its actually a seperate drain thats blocked and judgeing from what you have got out of the front glass drain tube then im not suprised .

Image below of the rear drain on the n/s/r , its a bitch to get at on that side though .. dont remove it as its siliconed in place .. you have to rod it or blow air up it .. downside is all it will do is push the dirt up the channel a bit .

best way is to wash it out but as access is so limited youll just end up getting water in the car... i can list out what i would remove if needed.

front glass tube drains straight into the gutter so a cable tie with a plastic tbe in the rubber one sounds correct to me .

Slow roof is again seperate to water leaks , i can give you costs of what it will be if needed but as these things are current only for now then i dont tend to post them as if someone in 2 years time reads this then it wont be an accurate cost.

Two places i recomend for Targa work .. One being Northway and the other where i work.

This is the only time i actually put myself forward for this as im afraid there are very few places that can do these .. i know as ive had to fix some that others had attempted and i dont like to have to redo someones elses work .

Must be something in the air for Targa problems atm .. ive answered this question via pm a week ago from a new guy and i have 3 booked in at work for dec / jan to do.

EDIT

This is one of those jobs thats far easier if i explain it on the phone and im happy to pm you my number if you want .. typeing will take for ever and not answer everything lol

PM coming your way fella

lots of rain fall, and the car has kept dry. thanks for all the help

Good work, OP.

When I said simple, I was more thinking the Targa roof mechanism refresh. The other issue, the drainage however, sounds like more of a pig.

Sounds like it's all sorted, deMort to the rescue yet again.

To be fair .. infrasilver was bang on the money .. i just had a chat with the OP to confirm were the water was in the car and what else he might need to do and then ramble on like i always do :D
