This may have been done to death, but I'm turning into my parents ref not being able to find anything on the internet! So here goes...

- is the "Porsche Approved" battery only available from Porsche? Or is it a standard brand (Bosch/Varta/etc) and model that could be bought from anywhere?

- N-rated tyres...are PS2s the only ones on the list?

Just visited an OPC looking into putting a warranty on my car. All good, car noted as being a decent example. Battery is non-std (quelle surprise :)) and a tyre has a nick in it that they reckon would be an MOT fail.

I'll get the tyres sorted regardless of course, but cannot stand Pirelli PZero tyres. Michelin Pilot Super Sports are my go to tyre (now P4S I believe)...but can't seem to confirm if these are N-rated. If one has to be replaced, I'm tempted to bit the bullet and change them all.

I also have a couple of non-standard lower suspension arms which is unfortunate and expensive if I go down the warranty route. Mulling that over.

∆ but only if you need OPC warranty, otherwise most favour P4S.
Likewise the Moll battery, maybe they are cheaper for Porsche originally or lighter weight but they are a POS.

There are some other highly recommended specialists who offer opc-style warranties.
Very different to the sort you commonly see advertised.

Check out Hartech, JZM or RSJ from memory.
You might find the cost of the 111 point check, service and and remediation work @ OPC makes the above options look decidedly good value.

Hi mate. Have Porsche given it an 111 point inspection and that's all that is needed for their warranty? If so, it's going to cost in excess of 2k close to 3k including the warranty. Moll battery, standard suspension and N rated tyres with, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Goodyear, continental, Dunlop and Michelin offering N2 rated tyres but, the preferred choice are Michelin ps2.

May I ask why you're thinking of a warranty? :thumb:

In reverse...

Cost of the warranty per annum isn't, IMO, that bad compared to the potential downside of engine/gearbox issues. I bought a higher miles car and whilst not something I'm unduly worried about, I'm not familiar with Porsches and am not convinced there are that many out there with >70k miles on the clock and am not convinced anyone can yet be sure how well the engines and boxes hold up.

So the idea was it was a bit of Insurance for a couple of years for a relatively palatable cost :)

Having the check done also gave me a bit of additional peace of mind...

However, as you note the total cost incl. tyres and the check would be over 3.5k, which changes the balance of the equation a little...

The tyre will need replacing at some point anyway (and the issue was picked up during my tenure), and if I stuck to a PZero then the replacement cost drops (relative to changing brands).

The battery and suspension arms are the kicker though. Everything I've ever read notes the Porsche batteries are hopeless. And the quote for that is £300 (!). And ref the suspension, the car rides well. There are zero issues with the handling whatsoever and the parts look, and I strongly suspect are, all but identical. That's 1.2k or so.

There's also a potential additional wrinkle on service history (which I'll post on once I have a definitive position :)).

On the flip side, the car was good value when I bought it and I ran an F355 for 3yrs without warranty (5.5yrs in total), an AMV8 for 5.5yrs without (8.5yrs in total) and a Maser GT for a yr without (2yrs in total)...so am not averse to running a car without and there is definitely something in the "you never see a poor warranty company" view!

I'll look at the other options too (and will further consider simply not bothering and enjoying the car!). None of those companies are near me though, which potentially adds complications...?

Ill just talk about the battery .. and the warrenty !

If you can get a Porsche warrenty then i would advise it .. bear in mind i work for an indy so adviseing this goes against what i do but it IS worth it !

Porsche warrenty whilst not as good as it was is still the best out there .

The original Moll battery .. hmm .. err .. yeah it was pants .. made of chocolate.

There is a new version called the red top .. the cells have a red base on the caps .. i have been reliably informed by my Ex collegues that its a pretty decent battery and far better than the old one .. based on this i would advise it to get the Porsche warrenty .

Its not cheap .. but its not pants either .

If you have run previous cars with no warranties then id be tempted to do the same here. I never bothered with a warranty on my 997 turbo and have done over 30,000 miles in it over the last 2.5 years.

I replaced my rubbish porsche battery with a bosch - cost something like £100 from carpartsforless using their offers. Tyres I went for the PS4S and they came up cheaper than the rubbish P-Zeros which were on the car. They also have lasted me twice as many miles!

I currently have a 997.1 TT under Porsche warranty and up until this year I have never claimed a significant amount on any other car I've owned. I bought a low mileage BMW E93N 335 Sport Plus as a daily this year and the engine went, Turbo went, flywheel, coils etc... the dealer (not the dealer I bought it from I might add) has been as good as gold, even beyond that if possible. The claim must be up to 15k by now. I will never run a car without an official dealer warranty and I'm glad my two cars are covered. Just another perspective for you to consider and best of luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks guys.

Checking out the other warranty alternatives, I'm not convinced they're cheaper like for like (even where that's possible to spec').

I'm erring on not bothering tbh and banking the 3.5k for later use. (I guess the thing in my head against my other cars is they were all covered for at least 12mths which let me get used to their foibles whilst covered :)).

Hi Murph,

I am not sure which model / year your car is, but assuming the car has the latest IMS shaft / bearing and is a Gen1, the biggest possible cost is an engine failure due to bore scoring, which is relatively rare.

I bought my car under OPC warranty. Bad luck I know, but it had an engine rebuild due to bore scoring, covered by warranty circa £11k. Also, during my last 111 point check they pointed out that my steering rack had a slight leak and they replaced it and did a 4 wheel alignment, all under warranty circa £2,400, no quibbles.

For me, I wouldn't be without my warranty / Insurance for peace of mind. However, if I do buy a Gen2 I would most probably go down the same route as you and just set aside a contingency fund every month, to cover future repairs.

Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Mines a gen2 C4S and under 2 years of ownership and Porsche warranty I've had both rear lights replaced for the condensation issue, one engine mount because it was sagging and a firmware update to the PCM to improve the iphone compatibility. The cost of those items probably breaking me even on the warranty expense with the added piece of mind that the engine and gearbox are covered should disaster happen.

I don't mind the minimal extra cost for N rated tyres, I personally like the unpopular on here Bridgestone's which are the cheaper end like Pirellis which I hated.
I did have a new battery a year ago and it was much dearer from Porsche on a Saturday morning than the link to Jasmine above, but I needed it after a sudden failure. The only warranty associated other cost is running OE brakes compared to quality OEM alternatives (Sebro and Textar are the same at half the cost of Porsche boxed items)

The same is true of many other parts, including Bosch wiper blades bought outside the Porsche network..I think I paid £17 for the OE spec wiper blades from ECP with discount. Porsche quoted me £90.

Update - I'm going to run the gauntlet :)

OPC has come back and noted the car must have a major service at an OPC before a warranty can be put on.

The purchase story was the car was due a major when I bought it. That was thrown in and I was asked if I wanted it done at an OPC or specialist.

My experience of main dealers of various marques is mixed at best, but I called an OPC to see if it mattered wrt warranty. I was told explicitly "no" and that the specialist stamp would be sufficient as long as the correct service was done and Porsche parts used. Off it went to a specialist. Lesson learnt - neglected to get this in writing (not usually that remiss!).

Anyway, it's made the decision for me. Total cost of the 2yr warranty is now nearly 5.5k incl. 3k of unnecessary stuff.

Will see how I feel in 18mths' time when it's next due a service... But the premium in service cost to keep the car in warranty, plus ridiculous prices on stuff like batteries has made me realise that Porsche warranties are just as expensive as those from places like Ferrari, they just wash the costs out elsewhere :)

I now have 5.5k in the breakdown bank :)

Anyone have recommendations for good indies in North Essex/Suffolk?
