comment: Bearing checked when RMS replaced Feb '18. Seal has gone, but bearing well lubricated and showing no outward signs of failure. Discussed option with Indy and decided to leave well alone.

IMS failure 1998 C4

Hi l was reading the update on IMS failures and thought I should share my experience in November last year..
I had bought the car a year earlier and had gone thro a mixed experience with specialists including one listening to the bearing with a stethoscope and it seemed fine. In November I took it to the same specialist and asked them to cut open the oil filter when they changed the oil. Shiny bits of metal in the filter and I posted on here at the time . I got three specialists to respond the one above said go and run it for 1000 miles and check again , one said don't run the car again until the bearing is changed the last said drive it to us , about 130 miles , but no more.
I used the last one and when they took the engine out the bearing was so degenerated they reckoned it would have failed in 10 miles. The sump had bits of broken bearing in it.
So at 70000 they bearing failed.
The car had had very limited use for 4 years before I bought it at 62000 miles and while the low mileage was attractive the downside may well have been the effect of this on the bearing.
So these cars do still fail from this potentially defective component.

...mine collapsed at 69k miles...no warning... dwarf and bearing debris found throughout the engine when stripped down...

...no dwarfs were found in the engine...swarf was though :D

Can you post your full details up then:

comment: A bit late to the party but thought I should add my data. Gearbox rebuilt in the summer so had bearing checked. Original bearing in great condition and I had the dust shield removed on the bearing.
