The Silver Bullet-Resto Project

Hi Gaz,

This is a master thread on how to build a 924 :worship:

It will be better that when it came from the factory. I'd love to see it when it's finished.

Cheers,
Paul

Top skills on show here again our kid :thumb:
It does look rather flimsy for the job it does. I guess that what make Porsche, Porsche :?:

Its a pretty solid lump once its all in Chief a bit fiddly getting the rubbers and torsion bars set . Paul no worries I will pop down to get a run in the new GTS :thumb:

Gave the Torque tube a refurb today, and started to knock the drive shaft out which moved fairly easily however didn't have anything long enough to get it out job for another day.

So after watching a few vids on the tinterweb removing the drive shaft from the tube it looked a real ball ache hammering it out with a bar, so dedided to take a slightly different approach :D

Reverse pick up to garage door
strap sling to end of TT and anchor on the tow bar
wrap a small sling round the drive shaft
anchor tirfor to leg of bench
gently gently on the tirfor out she comes luvly jubly all in about 10mins :D :thumb:

Think I am going to take a similar approach to get the bearings out with a cap the size of the inner diameter drop a wire through it feed it down the tube and pull through with the tirfor

Gaz, this is proper whacky races stuff :bandit:

Well as it turned out getting the shaft out was the easy bit, the bearings on the other hand  after a few different attempts and different methods they came out ended up making up a plate with a hook that sat on the back of the last bearing and then pulled them through with the wire bond/tirfor even then had to give them a tap with a bar occasionaly to get them moving the friction from the rubber collars takes a bit of moving.

So now I have them out you can see all were completely foobared, these ones are just a press fit in the collars for the bearings I was expecting the collars to be two half`s that you have to rivet back together. I`m taking this as a bonus just need to check the bearings are the right ones.

You sent a link to here via the PCGB forum after asking for some ideas to remove the driveshafts and after reading through the thread you've done some impressive work.

Had mine for 5 years now and pulled 90% of it to bits including head rebuilt and recently the clutch (luckily the torque tube bearings were ok) alongside all the more normal 'stuff'. I've found they're great cars to work which shows how well they were built 30+ years ago.

Great work!

Cheers Russ :thumb: good to see you on here I like the two tone look of your car and I was very tempted to go down this route but was outvoted in the household didnt fancy my idead of mettalic viper green and silver.

So just waiting for the new bearing kit to arrive, after talking to augment automotive you have to be carefull the insert fits the bearing properly and is not squeezing it so as not to move it when you are reinserting the driveshaft. I don't need the rivets as I have one piece carriers

I have a feeling this could be another adventure in the garage, I have managed to spray the inner arches body colour and made a new exhaust heatshield with a shield from a fiat punto after a bit of fettling as I couldnt find a decent second hand one.

So the bearings arrived grabbed a quick half hour today and got them built up don't think chapping them in the torque tube is going to be as quick

So the good news is the torque tube is done :thumb: ended up making a thick steel washer that fitted the bearing carrier loaded them on to the driveshaft bit of fairyliquid lube then chapped them in with a metal tube job done if a bit of a ballache.

so then moved on to building some bits up got the spring plates done gave the inner faces a good coating of anti-seize and suspension mounting plates fitted on the car . Looking forward to starting to build things back up.
