Been searching for an answer for this tonight without any joy.
My handbrake lever moves from side to side. Took off the plastic centre cover to take a look today but couldn’t fathom how it works? Photos 1 and 2 show the play side to side.
Copper connector for the handbrake warning light is not fastened to anything either. Picture 3 (or it could be one as who knows what order they will appear in)
Whole mechanism has the potential for rattling having had an up close look as it is not securely held in place and can be moved around with my fingers. Also photo 3.
Anyone got any tips or remember an old thread detailing something similar?
Good news is I managed to free some old loose change which was trapped inside.

Hi tyinsky,
Your handbrake lever should not have that much play in it, left to right. I've attached the picture from the PET which shows the bolt (bearing pin item 21) that the handbrake lever pivots on. If you have that much play the pin must be very worn, not in properly or the bearing bracket (item 2) has an issue. Regarding the contact spring (item 7) this fits under the lever, yours looks to have has broken off, there is a rivet that goes through it. I had a similar problem with the contact spring on my car as if it's not working properly I can't drop the top, it interlocks with the handbrake warning light and the cabriolet top motors.
Good luck with sorting it out.

Thanks decgraham, I will have a poke around in there again today. Diagram and annotations really useful.

Hi,
Its also possible that a weld joint has broken. There's a couple back there that when broken produce a wobble. It comes about through applying the handbrake too much. The pull usually results in a sideways action that can, after a while break, the joint.
If so, peel a little of the leather off and have someone tack it back.

Could not work out what was going on down there. The bracket seems solid, it could be play in the pin as that seems to be where it moves from, or I guess it could be the weld - that wasn’t on my list of possibilities until after I put everything back together 🤔
I’ve come up with my own little fix for it, inspired d by all the junk that I’ve removed from there while investigating (a metal pen top, lots of change, bits of plastic...). I taped together a couple of aluminium discs and forced it in the gap between the bracket and mechanism. No way it can come out as it is wedged on all sides. No rattling from the mechanism now either, no movement side to side, and it goes up and down as it should and feels totally solid. 😀
Also noticed a difference in the picture two posts up with the wire tightening metal thing at the end nearest the rear seats. Mine has a different centre and made a sight rattle from the middle when I moved/shook it. Faint, but worth getting. Cable tie through the middle made it silent.
Handbrake light connection I did not bother with. I had not even noticed it in two years so I’ve taped up the connector and cable tied it out of the way.
Great way to spend the afternoon 👨🏻🚀
