PROJECT HALF A CUP LS3 Swap?

Wow, I remember following your build thread on the corrado forum too! Those corvette wheels

I wonder just how many of us here had a Corrado 14 years ago (I had a couple of VR6s)!

I hear you on the alternative engine. Unfortunately Porsche are not like VAG in that every engine fits everything pretty easy..... Would an Audi engine fit? theres a guy on piston heads who fitted an Audi 2.7T to a boxster. In fact its the end time round as his first set on fire.

If it fits in a boxster... maybe in the 996? But maybe that did use the audi derived gearbox with just a bell housing swap.

LOL it's amazing how many people remember the Corrado build!

The LS3 will fit fine and work nicely.

First step of the weight reduction side of things tonight. Interesting what you find under seats. Five a day anyone! 😄🍎🍐

Yeah he is on an Audi forum I'm on. Fits but there is a lot of one off fab work to do. Knowing how my RS goes it would fly but I reckon must be a handful with the power delivery.

Must admit the Ls3 makes financial sense but to me a 911 is flat six. V8 noise from one just doesn't seem right but then I must be one of the few petrol heads in the world that doesn't really like the V8 noise.
Good luck with it, I'm sure it will be ace. Just disconnect two coilpacks

Sounds like a great project

So a quick weigh in last night and these things are heavier than I thought.
25kg each. So a 30kg weight saving with the first change to pole positions.

Wonder what the door cards weigh?.... 😄

Mini update. Been super busy with work so not a huge amount of actual progress, but did manage to go and catch up with my mate who has a 3D scanning business and discuss options for data capture of the 997 while the engine is out.
Did a bit of playing around with some 3D scans he had of a 964 and a V8 vantage engine... plan is to do the real thing in a couple of weeks with my 997 and then get the LS3 engine positioned and work out the CofG etc...
Clever stuff and will allow all the parts to be accurately modelled....

You know there's an outfit in the states do all the parts for a 996 LS conversion? :dont know:

Yep, renegade hybrids. It looks OK, but it's not exactly how I want to do it and does not address some fundamentals imho.

I want to make it as OEM looking and as well engineered as possible so will do it myself....

So a major step forward in the project today. My best mate who runs a 3D scanning business capturepoint.co.uk came up and scanned my existing 3.8 engine, gearbox and engine bay. This will give all the data we Need to create a fully accurate model of the V8 engine in the engine bay and model up the mounts and ancillaries needed.
It also allowed us to accurately establish the centre of gravity of the existing engine so this can be matched with a V8 and some additional weights. The CofG Was calculated by hanging the engine in different orientations from a crane and then realigning a common datum to find the centre of mass.
It also allowed us to weigh the complete dry engine which was exactly 200kg.
A fascinating day and I am now excited for the next steps.

Loved when hoovie did his LS swop a while back using the renegade kit, he found the car stupidly quick afterwards and getting the dash to work was a struggle, but it worked for him, till he grenaded the LS too..
Highlights.. https://youtu.be/imrtgl5Zp2w

Yeah, he used a second hand unknown engine and didn't dry sump the LS then went tracking it. Not a good idea.

I take it you have found the 'Swapped Porsche' group on Facebook? Lots of useful info there. Most of the builders are in the US but almost guaranteed one of them will have faced each issue you run in too. :thumb:

How technology has changed, when I dropped a V8 into my old Opel Manta some 25 + years ago I just had to lie there with a MIG welder and some metal plate to make engine mounts with the engine hovering over the engine bay from the block and tackle. No previous research was done and no info available, just lots of guess work.

I look forward to the updates.
