Has anyone changed a rear driveshaft boot ?
Seems like I need to do this job in the very near future.

Hi Jack

It depends on how you feel about spending a day on your back underneath the car

I understand it's a time consuming and messy job but doable

I chickened out and had it done at the specialist............got a big bill for a service and all 4 boots

I'm fortunate that I have the use of a scissor lift so should make it easier in that respect.
If anyone has tackled this job any pointers to look out for would be appreciated.

I had mine done a few years back by the mechanic I use here when I don't want to tackle a job myself. He did both sides and it took about 3 hours and cost €75.00 in labour. :D I bought the "boots kit" from Matt at Type 911.

If you have downloaded the Workshop Manual you'll find the "How to do it" on page 593 "Removing and installing drive shaft (manual transmission)

I would also recommend that "while you're in there" you do both sides, all 4 boots.

Good luck and don't forget to post up pics and your DIY experience.

Just had four boots done while in for new clutch (might be cheaper?) and labour was £85 excl. VAT.

Most definitely cheaper as part of a clutch change as drive shafts will be moved from box anyway.

Mines a Tiptronic, but I'm sure it'll be just as much fun as a manual stripping it out !

So is mine :thumb: you'll want the next page in the Workshop Manual then. My mechanic took it in his stride and didn't say it was a difficult job. Handy if you have the proper tool to crimp the circular clips, just makes it look nice and tidy.

Hi,
I did one on my 964, in theory it's an easy job, the one I did was an inner boot and to get it off you have to remove the CV joint, the problem with mine was that it was totally seized on the splined shaft, nothing would move it and it even broke my puller.
In the end I had to angle grind the inner race off, again not a difficult job just a pain in the rear.
I was probably unlucky though.
If it's an outer boot you'll need to remove the shaft from the hub, you'll need a hell of a breaker bar 3/4 inch would be good or a torque multiplier to get that nut off as it's set to a considerable torque.
Actually have just written that it should be possible to remove an outer boot from the inner side by first removing all the parts from the inner, if my memory serves me correctly as it was around 7 years ago when I did mine there's a circlip holding the CV in place.
Hope this helps, it's well within the scope of a diy mechanic.

Tackled this job today.

Once the shaft is off the car changing the cv boots is a breeze, everything has to be done from the tranny end of the shaft, once this joint is off (large circlp needs to be removed before this joint comes off the shaft) it's then just a case of removing and replacing the outer boot first, then replacing the tranny end cv joint and boot.

Before starting I read quite a few posts from different forums on how to do this job, and I'm really surprised that a few managed to remove the driveshaft without disconnecting the tie arms from the hub, everything is just so tight.
I even read a post where one guy managed to change the outer cv boot with the shaft still on the car ! A better man than me.

Not the easiest of jobs but certainly doable, and very satisfying when you're finally doing the last wheel nut up !!
Good luck.

Well one Jack, saved yourself a big bill and as you say, it's very satisfying to work on these cars
