Crunching noise on passenger window

Hi,

I took the car (997 gen1 2008) out of the garage yesterday having been away for a couple of weeks and while turning the wheel hit the passenger door window button accidentally. The window started to go down and then I heard a horrible crunching noise.

I drove it straight back home, with the window down, not being able to get it back up again and managed with the help of my wife to get it back up, but the sound is awful.
The motor is still working but the only thing I can think of is with not using it for a few weeks and never opening the passenger side for an age, the glass stuck to the seals and damaged the regulator or window mechanism when the button was pressed.

I thought it may be an easy job to take the door card out and have a look at the inner workings but having got the card off, there's another skin inside that would need to be removed, along with wiring for airbags etc. It looks like it may be a step too far.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem is going to be and is it serious?
The car is going into OPC Bolton on Monday for a part fit on the auto box that was on order before my opc warranty ran out. Part on order for 2 months and now the warranty has run out this happens.
While it's in should I get them to take a look, any ideas roughly what they would charge for a fault like this.

Cheers

Assuming it is the same design as the 996 then it uses steel wires to move the windows up and down. One or more strands will have snapped which causes the problem. You will need a new regulator. I did this on my 996 not so long ago, not a particularly big job. On the 996 it was disconnect battery, door card off, airbag off, peel back membrane where required, mark and remove glass, remove regulator with motor, change regulator, refit, adjust glass. It was adjusting the glass which took me the longest.

From what I remember seeing when I removed the door card, it didn't have a membrane as such. It had another metal lining which bolted on but a few other items needed disconnecting before you could get in to see the glass and regulator.

The last OPC one I had replaced was over £600. They generally replace the membrane as part of the work.

Boxster and 997 are the same for this .

As MC has said .. its the window regulator thats failed .. classic symptoms .

Its not a hard DIY but if you are doing it then put a towel over the door shut at the front .. it will get scratched by the metal membrain as you juggle it to remove the wireing .

996 = foam membrain.
997 = metal membrain .

I've had a quote today from a local porsche specialist, £140 for the part, £75 labour plus vat. It's a no brainier for me, I'm going to get it booked in rather than make a mess of things.
Like I say I took the door card off but taking off that metal inner membrane with airbags and then sorting out the window position is worth £75 plus vat to me.
Cheers for the help.

good call nick as the metal inner is alkward and very easy to drop against your sill taking the paint off , so far better left to the pros :thumb: and the quote is good I paid a little more than that for my gen2 pax window reg earlier this year. :thumb:
