warranty, some questions

hi,

I am thinking of moving to a 991 soon, test drove one at OPC recently. my question is around warranty, my current 997 is not covered by any warranty, so if anything breaks I would have to pay to fix it.
I would presumably want a proper Porsche warranty on a newer car, not that i'm expecting anything to go wrong but at least I could take it to OPC and not get stung!
if I buy from OPC, I believe they put a 2 year warranty on the car, is that correct?
if I buy from A.N.other dealer, or a private buyer, can I take it to Porsche and get a warranty put on it? is the normal process to agree to buy if they put it through the 111 point check with Porsche and then if it passes I take out the warranty, if it fails on anything the seller would get these sorted?

and lastly, where I see some for sale and it states "remaining warranty until 2019" etc.. how is this transferred, is it easy enough?

thanks

A car bought from an OPC would have a 2 year Warranty included in the price you negotiate.

If you bought a car from elsewhere without an existing OPC warranty you'd need to own it for 90 days before you could put an OPC warranty on it. If it's already got one the owner can transfer it to you by filling in a form which you would then send to Porsche GB.

If the car hasn't got an OPC warranty you can take it to an OPC for a 111 point check (£216 less negotiable discounts) and they will tell you what it needs to have done before it could get one. Use those details to help negotiate the purchase price you're prepared to pay.

If a dealer is advertising a transferable OPC warranty they can only be acting as a broker for a private seller as the warranty becomes void if they take ownership of the car.

Further to the above, if you were buying from a private seller and wanted to get a warranty straight away the best way would be:

(1) Get the seller to put the car through the 111 point check at your cost.

(2) Use the information gleaned to negotiate a deal.

(3) Get the seller to have the remedial work done and take out the warranty.

(4) Buy the car and get the seller to transfer the warranty to you.

Obviously all this depends on the seller being willing to do it and you being absolutely certain that the car is the one for you.

Good Luck :thumb:

As long as it is an OPC warranty....the warranty is on the car until cancelled or expires. It's not tied to the owner.

There is a transfer form to print off on porsche site somewhere. I just go into the OPC service team and get them to do it. It's a good excuse to talk to them about looking after the car and have a brew.

Prepurchase, most OPC service desk are ok with asking them about history on the car if they serviced it..eg if there are any recalls outstanding. Any OPC can look up basic info on any car, but not everything is visible if it's not a Porsche UK owned dealership.

OPC put 2 years on the car plus whatever is already on it. I've had one with 36 months on it.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the search.

If the car is less than 3 years old you also get the balance of the original warranty remaining added to the 2 year cover. In our case we got 2 years 10 months of cover.

thank you guys for answering all my questions, given me a bit more confidence in looking...

do people still get inspections on a 991? assume not if you are buying from opc, but how about privately?

My 2p worth = No need if buying from an OPC or an established Porsche Specialist. Definitely a yes if buying from any other vendor.

If buying a recent gen2 car why buy a warranty? Put the money in a slush fund.

am looking at an early 991.1, hopefully 2012 or 13 depending on what I find... couldn't afford a 991.2 at the moment Unfortunately! and need to sell mine first....
