M509 - Feuerlà¶scher AKA Fire Extinguisher

Disco - Where did you buy your flare type?
Their website is all in Italian and eBay brings up nothing.

I may buy one until I sort a Dammit style installation.

"Ze Werner".

My wife detests it. Me, I love the fact that it is so Motorsport impractical (passenger wise) but hopefully will do a super job.

No not plumbed so you have to lift (what is a considerable weight) it from across the bucket seat or get out and run around the other side to remove it. I have put a pull cord for speed on mine now to release the pins that hold the clips in place.

The bracket is bolted to the floor.

A friend who at the time was running an Elise alerted me to a group buy on one of their owners forums and I piggy backed on to that. Sparco do a rebranded version of them too, but basically you are going to have to go hunting with Google for a supplier as nobody mainstream over here seems to import them (use fire eater in your search as forum traffic tends to use the English translation). Objectively - they are expensive for a single use non-recyclable extinguisher and while they have plenty of fans they are not going to do a materially better job of controlling a fire than a bog standard off-the-shelf dry powder unit. Personally though I like the idea of it fitting in the door pocket, because if I ever need to use one I plan to be outside standing next to that open door before I would give any thought to fighting a fire. And if I were to be trapped in the car I absolutely would be able to reach it.

I saw this the other day:

Which is a C55, the same (apart from being LHD) as my car.

So I just called Mercedes and talked to their parts dept. who sent me this:

And I'm about to make an order for all the extinguisher bits - probably ~£80.

I'll cross reference what I get for the C55 with what is needed for the Porsche and post up a better list of part numbers and prices.

For reference the cradle is £26, and I think that's the most expensive part.

I got my Mercedes parts order today - couple of interesting things.

Firstly, I think I can probably put up a definitive parts list now - but, and it's significant - the cradle that I used appears to be NLA, I suspect because the design of fire extinguisher itself has changed.

If you want ease of ordering then you should therefore order these parts:

From Porsche
996 521 673 00 RHD bracket (puts extinguisher on the passenger seat)

From Mercedes
A301 990 00 42 Washers (x2)
A203 868 04 12 Fire extinguisher cradle
N000000 001527 Screws to hold bracket to seat (x4)

From wherever
rivets+rivet gun
Gloria ABC 1kg Fire Extinguisher

Or if you want to use the older cradle as I have:

From Porsche
996 521 673 00 RHD bracket (puts extinguisher on the passenger seat)

From Mercedes
A001 994 28 45 Clip nuts (x2)
A301 990 00 42 Washers (x2)
N000000 000509 Screws to hold cradle to bracket (x2)
N000000 001527 Screws to hold bracket to seat (x4)

From eBay
A000 866 02 14 Extinguisher cradle
Gloria Fire Extinguisher from here: https://www.expert-security.de/gloria-autoloescher-p-1-db-mit-kfz-halter.html

I prefer the older cradle, personally, and as I still have one left over from the 996 I'll use that in the C55.

I did buy a new retaining strap - which is still available direct from Mercedes, even though you can't use it with the new cradle:

All together now - you can see that bar the mounting tabs on the bracket it's identical to the 996 version:

I've got a load of spare fixings and straps, plus a bracket for I have no idea which model of Mercedes, so if any of you fancy doing this and need something give me a shout.

I'm currently wondering whether I'll win a small prize at Christmas for "most boring thread we've ever had on 911uk".

Interesting as ever Neil.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference in the gear in this weeks updates vs the original setup you had settled on?

Better parts? Or different parts to use the different sized extinguisher?

It's probably glaringly obvious but nightshift sleep deprivation has me a bit discombobulated.

So when I get around to this do you suggest going for the parts list you compiled last time around or the stuff above?

Interior is next for me. So once I know if I'm able to retain the standard Porsche runners I'll know if I can use the excellent info in this thread for mine.

Cheers.

PS. I'll have a listen to my radio tomorrow. Standard CDR22 with standard speakers. I don't even have door speakers, only 2 dashtop and 2 rear quarter ones. Lightweight drivers spec innit.

Hi Mark,

The setup I've just posted is going in my C55, however it's clearly the same kit of parts that Porsche used. I've had more success in finding the correct parts from Mercedes than I did from Porsche, ultimately - so for you I'd recommend this parts list:

From Porsche:
996 521 673 00 RHD bracket (puts extinguisher on the passenger seat frame)

From Mercedes:
A001 994 28 45 Clip nuts (x2)
A301 990 00 42 Washers (x2)
N000000 000509 Screws to hold cradle to bracket (x2)
N000000 001527 Screws to hold bracket to seat (x4)

From eBay or other second hand source:
A000 866 02 14 Extinguisher cradle

From expert-security.de:
Gloria Fire Extinguisher from here: https://www.expert-security.de/gloria-autoloescher-p-1-db-mit-kfz-halter.html

Which will give you this:
