993 Oil Consumption (Again!)

May I seek views on the above hoary old question, and apologies if this has been addressed multi-times before? After just over 2 years ownership of my 73k miles 1996 993 Targa, I'm trying to figure out what engine oil consumption I should expect. My official Porsche Drivers Manual quotes "Up to 1.5 litres/1000km". By modern day liquid-cooled engine standards this does seem very high, but I do recognise that a 20+ year old air-cooled engine will use more oil. Some other internet threads indicate oil consumption is higher the fuller the oil tank is kept. Not really seen any guidance on whether there are any particular grades/makes of oil which minimise consumption.
Any inputs on typical oil consumption/ tips to minimise consumption would be appreciated.
Many thanks, John

After 170,000 miles using semi synthetic mobil 10/40 I get about 1/2 litre per 1000km no rebuilds and it leaks a bit. Oil level is kept 1/2 way up dip stick and rarely reads on guage more than just above red. At 70k you're just about run in but it will still leak a bit.

Basically what Porsche have stated is really a very high limit and rebuild time in the real world.

I've just arrived in Tuscany after a two day 1200 mile trip (I head back to the U.K. Wednesday in her). That's a steady 85mph for 90% of the journey in temps as high as 38 degrees ...... and my near 150K mile 993 I doubt has used 250ml.

Got slightly caught out at Le Mans Classic this month and put in 500ml at LM after 3,200km since last oil-change. Gauge was reading fine earlier this year, but a long hot trip to Heveningham Hall then a very long, very hot one to LMC must have used a bit.

94,000 miles on the engine, checked on the gauge (hot) as I can never see it on the dipstick. Moving off bottom, but at top of orange segment.

Mine was using roughly a litre every 1,000 miles. Leaking from just about everywhere, yet still within the Porsche factory limits and still achieving about 290 BHP on Wayne Schofield's dyno. And 85% leakdown on one cylinder. So much for the PPI from Specialist Cars Ireland :dont know:

Interested to see what it uses once the engine rebuild is finished next month.

I did a 1500 Kms round trip to a few places here in Spain in early June this year and I like wozy doubt the car used more than 250ml of oil. Drove at around 140KMh most of the trip. I have 106000Kms on the clock now so about 66000 miles.

ATB :)

117000ish miles and use around 250 ml in 3000 miles - never fill above the middle of the twisties and the gauge only registers just above the red mark - if I fill 3/4 up the twisties the gauge registers half way - I reckon the depth of the twisties is about a litre and top up in 250 ml increments. Have seemed to use a bit more in the hot weather but that's probably down to a recent weepy upper cam cover which has developed - that's the winter project sorted then......

Some 993's never leave the garage between services....... :dont know:
