C4s engine out

Car going in to take the engine out and sort oil leaks(hopefully just rubbers and gaskets that have perished with age and not much running). While it's out, what else is worth looking at, besides maybe a new clutch.

I think a lot of people get carried away with some of the 'while your in there' type jobs when often the replaced parts would have easily done another good chunk of miles. My advice would be to only replace stuff that looks like its failing / damp / leaking, anything that is still doing its job perfectly leave well alone.

Couple of suggestions to get you started:

Power steering belt
Power steering drive seals
Engine tin refurb
New engine mounts
Clutch fork bearings
Driveshaft refurb
Fresh plugs
Fresh oil filters
New valve cover gaskets
New oil breather pipes if perished

The list could be endless - best to get the engine out and make the list once its on an engine stand and you can have a good look at it.

As someone with the engine and gearbox out of his C4S all I should say is don't get too carried away :grin:

Get the chassis leg support panels off and have any surface rust attended to.

It's a good time to have a new clutch, power steering belt and chain housing gaskets.

I've taken a load of the alloy parts off for vapour blasting and have refurbished the fan housing. I've also decided to replace all the heat shields and PU hangers.

The cost gets way out of control fast!
 
I'll be dropping the engine this winter and I did the plugs,leads and cam cover gaskets in situ. It would have been much easier with the engine out.
If you have the facility to put it on a stand then it's a good time to check/replace the oil return tubes, although then can be done in situ. Rear main oil seal is a possibility. I've got an oil leak around the cam gear housing, which I intend to do I will need expert advice and help when I do that. I will probably get carried away as the ocd kicks in. Who knows 3.8 P&Cs, 9m heads, RS cams just don't tell shwbo.
 
Sound proofing in the engine bay ? Mine has hardened over the years and is on my list should I drop the engine. I bought the tidy strip which improved the appearance.

Yes I've done all of the above, how many miles is the car showing?, so some replacement items will depend upon mileage.

Just one warning here, don't be surprised if your engine out and gasket replacement doesn't entirely fix your oil leaks, some leaks are due to through bolts etc that can only be done with a rebuild.

I still fully expect my car to have a small drip now and again even though I've done all gaskets, lower, upper, oil bridge, my car has 104 miles so I'm likely to have a rebuild in another 20-30k, which could be a good few years.

Is your engine varioram?, if so check the actuator seals, particularly the bottom ones which have a tendency to leak.

Also I'd be tempted to replace the twin disi belt, you don't want that snapping.

Do everything you can with engine out, otherwise you'll kick yourself.

This all sounds very familar :grin:

Mine had a few oil leaks and I was planning to do a 're-seal'. Having had two specialists look at it and pointing out oil coming from the chain covers, cam covers, one from a barrel/bolts, where the power steering pump meets, basically everywhere there could be a leak, and the later discovery that even though the car was running great it did have heavy leak-down on one cylinder it seemed daft not to take the whole thing apart.

There is a common view that the bottom ends of these engines are 'bulletproof' and while I don't doubt they are very, very well made it is also hard to argue 20-years of use will not have taken some toll. And once you have got to that place a 3.8 can be justified :)

Hoping for a leak free engine with more torque. :sing:

Engine out

Well, finally got car in garage and engine removed. Quite a lot of leaks so all gaskets and rubbers are being replaced. Clutch past it's best so new clutch. Excessive play in dual mass flywheel so new one required. New timing chains, new bolts, plus lots of other bits!! Parts bill already £4500!! Labour still to add
Not quite the couple of thou tidy up I was expecting. Bang goes the wife's new kitchen plans. Anyone else had to replace the flywheel?

Why new timing chains? The split chains are not recommended on these engines iirc?
 
Ill post back when I get more info as I'm useless technically. Was told by one of the lads that 24 bolts had been ordered from Porsche which weren't cheap.More expense!!
