I remember doing something similar in my cousins car when his clutch went. This was in the mid-90's in a battered old 80's Vauxhall Cavalier. Basically the drill was accelerate slowly until the speed matched 1st gear, then slip the gear lever out of 1st into 2nd (without the clutch) while feathering the accelerator. It worked, just, enough to get the car to the garage anyway
