Mini Copper Fuel Gauge Problem Need Help

Hi Guys,

I have a 2004 Mini Cooper and the Fuel gauge is a 8 led one just under the satnav unit and I have full tanked it and it won't go passed 4 lights which means half a tank of fuel when it's got a full tank of petrol.

I have changed both fuel levelling sensors and have checked all the wiring from the sensors to the gauge and can't find anything wrong. Checked for continuity on all the wires and they are all okay.

I checked all the earth grounding wires and they are all okay.

Need help as it's really starting to bug me.

Look forward to your replys

I don't know anything specific about Minis...

Is the gauge working as it should? If you drive it for a bit, does the gauge go down?

Is it definitely brimmed? With 996s you get a problem where the fuel tank breather is blocked, so its clicking off the petrol pump earlier than it should.

It does go down if you drive it and definietly brimmed as I opened the cover to check.

I pluged it into a Snap-on diagnostics and still no joy.

It also has a test mode on the dash with checks and rests and did that and still no luck.

I'm at a dead end...

Does the OBD readout not show fuel level in a diagnostic mode? If its showing the right level, then this would indicate an issue with the gauge or display itself.

Take to a specialist and try with another display unit?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Can't seem to check the fuel level with the OBD however it's giving the same result saying the issue is tank level 2 sensor, that has been changed with a new one from BMW....starting to think that the sensor they supplied is faulty.

Unless it's the display unit, however when I run a test on the lights they all light up.

Nobody know a BMW master technician?

So it turns out that the satnav screen unit is at fault casuing a short internally and I'm in the processing of trying to source a new or second hand unit.

Fingers crossed is all works when I plug in the new unit.

They don't make cars like they use to.
