I am currently on the hunt for either a 996 or 997 Turbo.

Cash waiting for the right car - I am viewing cars this week and would like to purchase fairly soon.

If anyone has or knows of either of the above for sale please contact me.

Criteria needs to be....

No lairy interior colours - Black interior, or would consider metropole blue.
Max 60k mileage
Service history must be complete with no huge gaps.
Must be manual

Ask a few specialists to give you the nod when a car matching your wants is about to come in.

Trawl the ads on Piston Heads as well as this site.

Look at cars for sale at the Porsche Club GB site.

Agree - it might be worthwhile calling your local Porsche indy and putting the word out - you might find that they know of a car out there that is looking for a home or they might have been offered one in Part Ex for something they have in stock

Don't discount indys who just do servicing. They may know a customer's car that has asked them to put feelers out that they are looking to sell but in no rush.

Tried all that mate....I. check Pistonheads, Autotrader, carandclassic, PCGB, and eBay most evenings for updates. Have a stock heads up with Harbour, 911V, Nine Excellence, and Ashgood.

I test drove a 997.2 C2S at Ashgood Cars a5 the weekend which I didn't think was for me...a bit smooth, and quiet and for me no real drama....felt I blended into the traffic on the drive.
I viewed the 996C4S at JR Motor Company....I do still love these, but it wasn't as tidy as I had hoped.

I think I would buy another C4S but I think now it would need to be ultra mint or Hartech rebuilt.

I am looking at a few cars this weekend again....A forum members 997T, the 997T at Autostore and a 996T at nine excellence. I am compromising on some of the main criteria, for example the nine excellence car is higher mileage than I'd like an£ had a fair few owners but seems pretty sorted and with a decent after sales back up.

What about Chandra's car Cheshire911?

Its a tiptronic. The OP states it must be a manual.

But yes, if he had not stipulated that, Chandra's car would have been my highest recommendation with only 33k miles and very well kept.

So I looked at a 997T today, which for the asking price was pretty poor cond....had a lot going for it. Manual, decent mileage, rare colour(cobalt)...bodywork wasn't too bad, but the interior was shagged! Not just normal wear and tear commensurate with age, but badly treated and beyond repair without some serious expenditure. Not for me.

To be honest I was a bit dissapoijntrd with the dealer....no test drives? Who in their right mind buys a £50k odd grand car without even driving it! Well obviously quite a few it seems, but a deal breaker for me.

Additionally to this it didn't give me the same draw as a 996. I think I am going to concentrate my search specifically to a 996T Manual. I've spent the last 2-3 weeks seriously considering other models including a 996C4S, a 997.2, and 997T, but the 996T is what Ive made up my mind I want.

So, if anyone has a 996t they are looking to move on or knows of any not yet advertised please let me know. I have a suitable cash amount sat waiting.

Out of interests, does anyone know what the X50 pack would add value wise?

When i was looking six years back it was about 5k. Values have increased dramatically since then so I would expect the gap to be a little larger. Imo totally worth it but pointless if you plan on modifying to the point of changing turbos.

FYI - It was quite a rare option at a premium of 11k when new

Good luck on the search :thumb:

You probably saw a "typical" example according to my local indy who sees a lot of shagged examples and if I pop around for a coffee, shows me on a ramp what a shagged example looks like!

It is always good to have focus - and this is better if you have decided to go for a 996 Turbo and eliminated 997 Turbo. I know of a very good example with 33k miles that has been maintained regardless of cost by a very good specialist indy. It has just had a set of new discs and pads all round last week. The rads and condensors have been replaced not so long ago. The only gripe (for you) is that its a tiptronic where you want a manual.

If you are prepared to move on this requirement, I am happy to introduce you to the seller (who is in no rush to sell by the way and maintaining the car with whatever it needs along the way until he sells it). Send me a PM and I'll try to introduce you.

A combination of a manual box and an X50 factory upgrade package will be a significant premium for you. The X50 option adds a rarity factor rather than outright power advantage - which someone here will quickly point out can be far greater with a £2k re-map. The X50 adds around 30bhp to the standard 996 turbo's 420bhp. The X50 has a different map, different turbos (larger K24's vs standard K16's) and intercoolers.

What does a 'shagged example' look like? Thought they would all be looked after??!

Far from it. Go and talk to a few indys and see some of the examples they see.
Then you'll see what shagged looks like.

That's why I recommend a PPI through someone who knows the marque and the model and knows what to look for. One thing I have gleaned from talking to my local indy and beyond is that you cannot judge these cars shiny side up or from photographs. That's why I never comment or remark on photos of a proposed purchase.

The example I viewed I'm sure would have been fine mechanically, especially from the supplying dealer who from what I gather have a good rep.....cosmetically though in particular the interior was terrible. Looked like the dog had been chewing at the plastics....dents in the seats, scuffed trim, dents in the dash, shiny heavily worn drivers seat....a scuff on the bumper can be sorted quite easily, bu5 the issues with the interior were more than I think would be sorted in pre sale prep. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's better to have a mechanically sound car but I couldn't justify a £56k spend sat in a car that looked as if it had been badly treated.
No test drives either? Strange? I've never driven a 997t....I might love it and the test drive alone may have been enough for me to decide I wanted it, but I might hate it....too much money to spend on a whim.

I'm very fussy with cars and the condition and whatever I buy needs to be clearly looked after and not just 'used'.
