early 996 3.4 added

Was this the £9k car on eBay? If so, looked very good value. :thumb:

yes it was the sub 9k one.....

manifold was fairly easy as it had all been off last year and had new bolts in.

still junked those and went new again. you have to be careful with the head though as if you put in stainless or titanium they will be harder than the metal in the head

still lots to do:
Top gear 200 cell cats and sports boxes
powerflex gearbox mount
remove resonator from airbox
maybe fit black samco hose from TB to airbox
steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake off to Jack at Royal for new leather
get the rust on arches sorted and painted
get some summer wheels and tyres
centre console delete in grey

then use it as a daily once the Cupra 290 goes back at end of year.

Summer wheels and tyres added - turbo twist with a slight hint of anthracite

the fronts are 7.5j and rears are 10j which I am told is right for the 996. tyres are 225 and 265. came with OEM centre caps too which was a result.

it does seem to ride better on the summers and less roll. less noise too. seems to turn in well and not so under steery.

going in next week for the 200 cell cats and exhaust plus some new clamps. also powerflex gearbox mount, gut the resonator and few other bits.

Top gear 200 CELL cats added and mild sports boxes. major improvement over the dansk crap on there. pulls much better and smoother. deeper sound too.

amazing quality and welding. lighter too than the OEM cats so win all round.

Powerflex gearbox mount added. has sorted out the gear change and less wobble. slicker gear change.

the seats front and rear as well as steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake cover were in a bad way, lots of wear through the colour as well as having the wrong colour on them. think they had been dyed before.

went to Gliptone and got some Graphite grey leather colour fast dye thanks to here. its a great match and very nearly OEM. for £50 its really sorted them out and matched it all. the pics makes it look glossy as I think its the flash.

still to do next week:

993 RS enbgine mounts
stainless steel brake lines
fit new power steering lines as old ones are failing

got the rust on arches to do but that can wait a bit.

RS engine mounts fitted. great deal from matt at Type 911 in Beckenham for cash on collection.

old mounts were shagged and when we took them out they were at angles!!

had to adjust the exhaust tips as they were on the bumper. hardly any more cabin noise but car feels more connected, changes directions better, turns in great and seems to put the power down better too. chuffed with these.

Goodridge stainless steel hoses in blue fitted all round. brake fluid change too and it was minging. much better brake feel and the mushy pedal has gone.

gutted the resonator in the air box and fitted the silicon hose. bit more noise and seems to flow a bit better.

Well worth doing that's for sure. Mine were clearly shagged but I did not know until they were out.

It was obvious with the exhaust tips as we had to adjust those to get it to fit again as they had dropped so much on the old mounts.

Once new mounts are on then it lifts it all up

I drove this morning and the rear feels really connected to the car and more sensitive to all inputs. Power down better too.

Also a lot cheaper than oem mounts too so win win

previous owner had made a few bodge jobs like cutting the PAS lines when the engine came for re build to save time. why I have no idea as it was some odd fix with jubilee clips and connecting hose which never worked and it leaked

so engine out to do the PAS lines, new water temp sensor which was leaking, new AOS, new oil filler neck and check the top end and valve guides and all good.

also new gearbox linkage clips and air con seals under the car.

new indicator stalks too as the old ones had stop deleting the indicator which is annoying AND dangerous.

had a clonking at rear which turned out to be a broken drop link bracket that sits on bottom of strut. been tack welded and hope to hold as fairly new MO30 suspension on there

seems I had a little friend in the engine bay as well...car used to live on a farm so answers on a postcard as to what it was ;-)

Missed this thread somehow, looks a great cheap project car, a sub £10k 996 has got to be the best car ever available?

Like Mistercorn, I'm curious about the crankshaft work, polishing is possible but anything other is not usually viable. The Crank is Nitrade hardened and can be redone after grinding but the cost is usually too high to make it worthwhile and there are challenges to even this work.

Fascinating following this thread - I was the next in line for this had you not gone ahead with buying it!
Looks like you got a bargain, even with all the remedial works
