Intermitent Temperature gauge issues - Cayman 2.9 Any ideas?

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Porsche Cayman Gen 2 2.9. It is a beautiful car and runs well. However it has had an ongoing issue since before I purchased the car.

Sometimes the Temperature gauge turn to zero and the red temp lights turn on the gauge. I know the Coolant Temperature Sensor (Part number: 99760642001) was replaced about 6 months ago at non specialist garage. Last time this light came on my car was last week. The temp. gauge was reading 60 then went to zero and the red light came on. As I was driving home, I went over a bump and the temp gauge came back on to 80 which would have been correct I would say, as the car was warmed up by then.

I took the car to Charles Ivy, they charged me £44 to tell me that the same sensor needed replacing and they would do it for £285! I called another specialist that will do the same job for £102.

Given that the sensor has been replaced and that it is intermittent, does anyone here know of another issues that could cause these symptoms? Is it worth replacing the part one more time? I suspect either something is either a loose connection somewhere or some dirt on the sensor potentially at this stage. Any ideas/suggestions?

I have checked the oil level and coolant they are both fine.

Not sure on the cayman but have you changed the termostat , I fitted a low temp thermostat it was only about £50 on my 997

I had an issue years ago with a failed coolant sensor, I changed the sensor and still had the same problem, I checked the wiring because I'd noticed some sheathing torn where the wires drop down the engine from the loom. I split the wires and re-soldered and it was working fine again and has done since.

The wires running to the sensor can be a little tight and it drops down to the sensor at the back of the engine near the A/C compressor. This is obviously on a 996 so will be in the total opposite position in a Cayman.

Highlly unlikely that the new sensor has the same fault as the old one .. the sensor was probably replaced for this fault but it didnt fix it .

Trouble is .. you have an intermitant fault .. if a fault is not there at time of testing then we pretty much have to make an educated guess or just say .. n.f.f and send you away .

I would suspect a wiring fault and a poor connection .. hitting a bump when the fault happens would reinforce that .. my best guess ..

The wiring plug behind the front drivers seat has a poor connection ..

At least after hearing your story then thats where i would start .

If you have a tip though .. get the coolant valve checked first .. the grey electric one on the side of the gearbox .

Thank you all for your responses, they are much appreciated.

I would agree that changing the part probably will not change anything, odd that it is still reading an error code correlating to this part unless it was a loose connection to this part.

I am taking the car to Eporsch, I will ask about the coolant valve and to check the wiring.

Thanks for the tip on Porsche Torque, I will check them out if this investigation fails. I will let you know how it goes.

Hi I had to change my water pump last month and after I had issues with the temp gauge. I changed the sensor myself but it still was as you described Red light no reading,, all in all it was an air lock and after running topping up running topping up all is now good.
