Hi Guys,
A friend is going to buy a 991 and asked me for a hand, since I'd already been through the process when buying my 997 Turbo.
I was wondering is there any particular guidance I should be aware of like :-
* Must have PSE and Chrono or walk away
* Avoid the new generation 991.2 they had shocking reviews
* Ensure the roof mechanism has been replaced in the last 2 years
* All the 991.1 engines are bullet proof across the range
Blah blah you the know the sort of thing

He's looking for either a Targa4s or Cab4s, so at least we reduced the list somewhat, but it appears the 991 doesn't really have any fundemental errors as I can't find to many article on the 991 period.

Mic Drop = "Used to emphasize that a discussion is at an end after a definitive or particularly impressive point has been made."
GTS model has most of the bells you'd want and the Targa is stunning.

Most are still under warranty with no major issues being reported across a lot of cars so no real trends yet....and the 991 forum on here is still relatively quiet which is a good sign in terms of reliability.

Each to their own with particular spec, but the sport chrono modes and PSE are always worth having, especially for the tunes played by the PSE on overrun etc. Disclaimer:exhausts may change and most will eventually.

Trim levels are good in pretty much all forms, usual personal preference on Aerokit / sunroof / cabriolet / targa options.

Worth sense checking depreciation in the man maths if is a stretch purchase...they will depreciate for a while yet.

Love the targa in all forms :thumb: :thumb:

I get the 991.2 point re the engines etc, but if that was your first Porsche you'd be well happy given its got more shove than most things and you still get some noise out the back.

IMO, the Sports Exhaust is a MUST. The PSE sounds so much better than the standard, and I would not buy a 991 without this.

Sport Chrono - it's a nice-to-have. It will be rarely used, but having a clock on the dashboard is handy. Personally, I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there, as I prefer the cleaner dashboard lines.

The 991.2, being a Turbo Engine, is obviously not going to sound as good as a Naturally Aspirated block. A friend of mine (who has had 47+ Porsche's!) does not like the sound from a 991.2, in comparison to the 991.1 If you are going to go for a 991.2, as above - make sure the Sports Exhaust is fitted. Note - the 991.2 has a far better PCM than the .1 generation.

Can't comment on the Roof Mechanism, as mine is a Coupe. However, I've not come across any major issues from Targa / Cab owners so as long as you have an OPC warranty, it should be fine.

As G2 says, it's each to their own when it comes to Specification. The 991 has, so far, proven to be very reliable with no major issues reported to cause any panic. Having said that, I would always want an OPC warranty for peace of mind, but that is just me!

in my opinion

Sports Chrono isn't essential on a 991, They have a sport button as standard ( which the 997 didn't), sport is as much as most people I think need or would use, Sports plus is to extreme in my opinion. if a car doesn't have Sports Chrono I wouldn't worry about it. Bear in mind I have fitted Sports plus to a number of 997's as part of my pre sales preparation rather that because the new owner asked for it.

PSE is always nice on any Porsche

Sport Design Steering wheel on a gen 1 991 I think is essential as it looks and feels so much nicer and the paddles give a so much better driving experience. the gen 2 has paddles as standard

I haven't had any problems with the sunroof on 991's, I think its a really nice feature especially the glass roofs, I have heard mumblings about rattles, I have found a lubricant for the rubber seals that can help ( and is useful for Targas and convertibles)
Most noises I think come from the cars in winter and the opinion I'm starting to form ( after speaking to owners both my customers and members from the forum) is that these cars dont like cold weather and after 10 miles or so driving they warm up and the squeaks go away, whether a car has a sunroof or not

The gen 2 3.0 Turbo engine is totally different in feel and noise to the 4 Cylinder Boxster, I ve never been a fan of turbo engines, but I do like the 3.0, the torque is smooth and nice, no turbo lag, a hint turbo whistle here and there, but I like it, more so than the full blown 3.8 which brings out the devil in you.

I do have a 991 Targa, Gen 2 coupe with a glass sunroof in stock and a lovely Gen 1 C4S Convertible arriving shortly.

Thanks FZP I am enlightened and educated....
I had seen the act of a mike drop on a few videos but most where shite R&B artists and therefore I didn't feel the need to close the gap

I'm trying to open my friends eyes to the concept of Porsche Specialist Dealers, if you don't know, you don't know, so I will keep your comments and suggested carsin mind when I throw something together for him :D

You can always put an OPC warranty on any of my cars after 90 days

Don't discount the specialists, if you ask 911AS about his recent purchase from an OPC and previous purchase from me, the OPC wasn't the easiest of experiences

Thanks Mark, yes I had thought of that, as that is exactly what I'm in the process of doing for myself, so I have already shared that idea. Infact I have told it would be foolish not to do it, as I'm guessing a new 991 engine is circa £25k !
He's a busy man, and he wants a great car, but he doesn't own spanners :mechanic:

I expect a new engine would be about half that. You hear all kind of crazy figures when people are selling or buying the Porsche warranty, but the real world figures are much lower.

Indeed, it would be interesting that get a definitive answer, I'm guessing the figure maybe somewhere in between my top estimate and other lower figures.

Does anyone know the actual figure ?
