interesting 993 road test

Tfl's Consultation for the expansion of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone can be found on this link:

https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/environment/air-quality-consultation-phase-3b/#have your say

I don't have a problem with the congestion charge in central London. Public transport is the most sensible way of getting around central London on a weekday.

But expanding the ultra low emissions zone to cover the whole of the area inside the north and south circulars, applying it 24/7 and applying it to residents inside the zone is ridiculous. Public transport to get around outer London just isn't viable in a lot of cases - as if anybody in their right mind would freely choose to sit on the North or south circular every day for fun. I'm not sure what good responding to the consultation will do but it gave me a chance to vent.

Thanks Rob for the link, I have also just had my say, I counted there were a choice 21 different ethnic groups wtf!! But I suppose that sums up London.

I got the impression the last few questions were there just to piss me off again

Ps - can you post the comments you entered, I suspect they'll be worth a laugh!

I think Porsche was finding it harder to get the air cooled engine to meet various targets. In addition to emissions:

- noise (no water jacket to muffle sound)
- headline power output (twin plugs make it difficult to move to 4 valves per cylinder)
- power/ torque curve (no variable camshaft timing)
- fuel economy

Basically they had reached the reliable power limits for a road car given the constraints of the air cooling. They did have space for 4 valves per cylinder, but the extra mechanicals would have obstructed the air flow, and therefore prevented sufficient cooling of the head. Water cooling was the only way to go. As with motorbikes.... there is a limit to air cooling's capabilities.

so the moral of the story, be content with what you had if it was great anyway, i don't need 0-60 in 3.5 secs or 200mph.............more isn't better

Fixed that for you 🙂

It's a pity that Porsche didn't continue their development of the air cooled engine. I'm sure that advancements in design/ metallurgy/ etc can raise the capabilities of these engines.

However I'm glad that 9M/ Singer/ Rothsport/ Pink seem to be able to get big numbers from their air cooled engines.

Of course, whether that's necessary is a valid issue, but it's great to have the choice.

Holy Mother of God! I've just looked at that and seen for the first time how far out they are planning to expand it. Utter gobsh!tes we have in charge. Just about everything the government and councils seem to do makes me think 'WTF? I don't remember voting for this?". Not that it applies to the Mayor of London as I would rather use a cheese grater on my own Ball bag than vote for filthy Sadiq Khan.

yes, more isn't ALWAYS better,

i echo the other post about applying new ideas to improve old designs, or just thinking a bit harder about what you already have.

Good god - that really is enough to make your blood boil. Utterly unnecessary, ridiculous means of making motorists pay more. As the VW emissions stuff has shown, modern cars are not necessarily cleaner (especially diesels).

Sorry I'll stop posting on this soon (I promise) but I'm debating putting in a reply to the consultation. Does anyone have any real word emissions figures for pork or the 993 variety?

Just a quick reply to agree with comments above. None of my vehicles comply with the ULEZ requirements and I need to visit elderly mother and my sister living inside the North Circular at least once every week or so.

The proposals are absolutely absurd. I also agree with comments above about the waste of space London Mayor. Never had a proper job in his life - only previous work experience as a Human Rights Lawyer FFS. Sanctimonious leftie parasite.

i dug out some stuff on youtube where a specialist company was testing 20 year old diesels in a different way, and they were cleaner than todays,

presumably my leased berlingo van which is euro 6 will be allowed in the zones, i bet your 993 is as clean.

so they want you to buy a new car, or strap a bike to the roof and park outside the zone,

mustn't say too much, its to save thousands of lives you know, and contradictory views are considered heresy.

Thing is Palladium, I wouldn't necessarily mind if it was all above board and proven. My problem is that it appears as if the car companies have been lying to consumers and governments about just how 'clean" these modern snore-fest cars are. In those circumstances, I utterly reject these nonsensical proposals as not being worth the paper they're written on.

I know I'm most likely preaching to the converted here, but still...it's cathartic to vent sometimes!

The other option (and I know I'm being more than a little facetious here) is to buy an even older car to drive the likes of Khan truly mad. I've always fancied an E type coupe...and can't afford a pre-'71 911
