Almost guaranteed that exhaust valve guides will be toast at 100k just as they are on the majority of 964's. With the bottom covers removed it is easy to test for excessive valve stem movement.
Other than this these engines are very robust. Timing can slip depending on what cam fixings are used. RS flywheel and clutch is a nice mod which really livens the car up although its not for everyone, especially if you do lots of town driving.
When comparing quotes, make sure new headstuds are included in the price, it makes a big difference to the bill.

I've had the lower covers off recently when I switched to billet, is the slop through wear noticeable? They'll be coming off again to hopefully nail this one leak and I'd be keen to know what type of tolerance is acceptable.

Are the valve guides a full strip down job once the engine is out or just cam covers off? Excuse ignorance but are exhaust outlets just on bottom banks?

Yes the heads need to be removed which is all part of a top end overhaul. With a large scredriver down the side of the spring on a closed valve you will see the top of the valve move. Anything other than tiny movement (less than a mm?) indicates guide wear.
Danny at U11 is THE man for geo setup btw.

What are the timing chain and tensioner replacement schedules?
I did the gasket covers couple of years ago and got to view them but it was a home based strip down with no capacity to change them.

There is no schedule for replacement of the chains or the tensioners. Chains can only be replaced on a full rebuild with splitting the bottom end but they are bulletproof. Tensioners are oil filled and again dont fail. Chain guides can wear with miles but are easy replaced without need of a top end rebuild and even then its not essential.

I would recommend Neil Bainbridge @ bs Motorsport in Wescott Venture park, Nr Aylesbury.

He's the best.

Had my gearbox rebuilt by the lads at Unit11 in Warrington, the box isn't in the car yet so can speak of the job itself yet but they were certainly good lads to deal with and very thorough.

Another year gone!

This now looks to be on the cards early 2019.
Valve guides are worn so top end will be redone.
Unit 11 showing ceased trading but have re-emerged locally so still a possibility.

Sports and classic - has anyone used these as they have also been recommended for air cooled work?

Northway Porsche.

Been in business for 25 years and you will struggle to find a negative review anywhere.

IMHO so many independants build reputations via PR driven from a few individuals whom are vocal on forums, making them flavour of the month, only for them to be here one minute and gone the next leaving you with zero support going forward, SVP as an example.

unit11 ceased trading as the owner of the business, rodger passed away. Johnny has opened up as unit11 ltd as a sole trader in his own right now, working out of the headshop round the corner. mine is in with him this week..

Johnny's contact / Unit Eleven Ltd is 07522 976034 until the old number is transferred across.
