Okay, thought I'd give everyone an update.
I have had several phone calls with various specialists and considered my options.
I've decided to have my mechanic remove the turbo in question from the car and see what I'm dealing with. I'll send it off to a turbo specialist once removed so they can evaluate it and see if its salvageable.
It could be just a case of having it re-conditioned and re-fitting, but if the main casing has become porous, it may be a new turbo as apparently the parts are really hard to get hold of.
Whilst attempting and failing to remove the turbo on Friday, my mechanic noticed it was seized, I pysically put my finger in and tried to spin the turbine, but it was totally jammed, not a great start.
I wonder if that a result of bearing failure, or oil starvation?
He's been struggling like mad to get it off and already damaged the oil sump on the underside of the turbo beyond repair, I'm expecting to have to replace more auxiliary parts that will become damaged during the removal process, oil pipes etc.
I think he is regretting taking the job on in the first place. I knew it was going to be a pig of a job. I just hope it doesn't end up costing me thousands.
