Hi,

My car has passed the 100K mark and I'll be looking at rectifying a couple of small leaks and possibly clutch replacement later in the year plus some ancillary work such a major service and tidying the tinware.

As this points to dropping the engine, I'm going to have the top end refreshed and possibly all the chain tensionors etc done while the engine is out and any recommended upgrades within standard specification. Once completed I'm looking to have the car remapped possibly at chip wizards.

Can anyone reccomend from experience anything specific to add to the list while the engine is dropped and everything is accessible?

From recent experience, can I have recommendations for trusted air cooled experts that can perform and warranty this work?

I'm already in contact with the guys at Strasse and Unit 11 as I'm based in Leeds but as this is probably a once in a lifetime experience for me and likely to be into a good four figure invoice, I'm keen on the latest views (potentially from recent experience but please chip in) for someone going through the engine that knows the 993 inside out and and can guide the process.

I'm also hoping to have the fan painted and the bay tidied up while in there so there will be some cosmetic aspects to the work.

Any guidance on the above appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

Ninemeister in Warrington had a good reputation, when I had a 993 many moons ago.

Or Nick Fulljames, ex Autofarm now at Redtek. Again, good rep.

Hartech... do a great job on water cooled.

No direct experience, just going from what I've heard...

I use Strasse and would be happy to let Dave Sunderland do any work required on my engine.

i'd be interested to see what your quote comes in at, you might be looking nearer to 5 figures if it gets busy in there! good luck.

You'll struggle to find a better mezger engine builder than Adam at 9e IMO. They do at least one 964/993 air-cooled every month with 12 month warranty and also upgrading some of the inherent weaknesses at the same time to future proof the engine.

Unambiguous pricing too which is nice.

A Porsche owner recently spent 20k on an air-cooled build with a bunch up North won't mention names. Engine pulls perfectly but smokes like a chimney. Car had to unfortunately be sold and the engine is now being rebuilt again by a friend who bought the car. I don't think they bothered to replace the valve guides and stems on a £20,000 engine rebuild! Unbelievable but true.

I had exactly what you are contemplating done (including the chip wizards remap, but not the fan paint) at Unit 11, 6 years (and 27k miles) ago. Hasn't missed a beat since. I can vouch for the quality of the work and wouldn't think of taking mine to anyone else. If you have it all done (and some of the 'while you're in theres'), I would expect it to break into a 5-figure sum (ask me how I know - although I did have a bit of gearbox work done as well). :D

Another :thumb: for Unit Eleven. Excellent work, great value and as much advise as you will ever need.

Why "fix" what possibly isn't broke?
Does it burn oil or rattle?
Looked after properly that Engine should do another 100,000 before a top end is even necessary.

Even if they drop the Engine to do the ancillary work/Service/Clutch I wouldn't open the engine up unless it was really tired.
Thats unless you have the spare cash and you just feel like it.
If it gets a clean bill of heath, with good compression, I don't think a top end rebuild will make the car more valuable IMHO

Unit11

Many thanks for the advice, I take on board about if it's not broken it won't need fixing, going to have a compression test etc and any other pre-drop investigation so that I can budget for the fix. Small leak has developed but think this is from when I've switched lower cam covers for billet but maintained torque for plastic type, everything was so seized when I did a strip down of the back end for chassis rails I used optimal on everything and maybe a couple of the hex bolts have loosened.

Please feel free to keep the advice coming,

Johnny and Danny at unit 11 rebuilt my 964 engine last year.
Easy to deal with no problems and great service

If you have a rough idea of how many miles you can do before topping the oil up, and how much you need to add, this will be useful information for your mechanic. Your driver's manual indicates what Porsche considers to be excessive consumption.

I'd think you'd be very very unlucky if your engine needed a rebuild at 100K miles. It's virtually unheard of. Unless it's smoking like a Cuban cigar and/or using more than a litre of oil every 1000 miles I'd leave well alone. A little oil getting past the gaskets doesn't mean it's time for a rebuild. A lot leak a little with no issues (which normally only starts to happen when some div has used too thin an oil at service).

I'd be revamping the suspension as that's bound to be worn.

Almost guaranteed that exhaust valve guides will be toast at 100k just as they are on the majority of 964's. With the bottom covers removed it is easy to test for excessive valve stem movement.
Other than this these engines are very robust. Timing can slip depending on what cam fixings are used. RS flywheel and clutch is a nice mod which really livens the car up although its not for everyone, especially if you do lots of town driving.
When comparing quotes, make sure new headstuds are included in the price, it makes a big difference to the bill.

Agree on oil, I switched to 10-40 but last couple of Indy services insisted on using 5-40 Mobil One which has added to the problem.

Head studs above is a good one, I'll factor this in.

There's no other rattles or such, car pulls like a train etc.

Noted on the suspension, failed MOT on leaking original shock 2 years ago so had the dampers springs and bushes all replaced at a specialist in Leeming.

Would have used COG but it was my main car at the time and I needed it back ASAP. Once the engine leak is sorted and the map is done, I'll get their set up as I want the steering arms amended to remove the rubber dampers which Chris will do as part of the job.

THEN it will be finished I keep telling myself.....
