Hi All,

I'm a relatively new owner of a porsche 997. Purchased about 6 months ago and wow what a car. It's a 3.8.
But recently it's developed a metally ticking noise that gets louder as the engine warms, so I took it to the garage that serviced my Mercs (he also does Porsche) and after a few hours came back to me saying it's the liners and will need a total rebuild. so took it for a second opinion (a specialist just down the road from this garage and he said the similar thing. I'm not sure if they know each other and have discussed. So booked it in with Porsche for next week. Am frightened they might say it needs a new engine. what do you think I should do? the cars done 96k but has full history and the engine apart from the ticking noise is smooth. No black smoke, no excessive oil usage. Help please!

Hi Mate
Welcome to the forum, only wish your first post came under better circumstances. If I were in your shoes, I'd be putting a call into Hartech and having a discussion with them. They have a great reputation for their engines and you can sleep easy knowing what they say is gospel.
Give them a buzz and see how you go

:welcome: to 911uk, sad that you're posting under such circumstances. :nooo:

It sounds like you need to have a borescope done by someone who knows what to look for in the resultant pictures.

Sadly bore scoring is quite a common issue and, if severe, will require an engine rebuild.

Whether you have it done and enjoy the car for many more years or .......... is up to you.

Good Luck

Thanks. Yes, called them after reading other thread but they must be busy as tried twice today but no answer. Will keep trying.

How much does a borescope cost? No plans to get rid of 911 they say once driven forever smitten. It's the car I've always wanted since teenage. Now 51 years old managed to buy one.

what area are you in mate , sad that your welcome to the forum is under this potential cloud.
I urge you to get it borescoped by someone who really knows what they are looking at, as so many garages mistake normal wear bore scuff for the dreaded borescore, also dependant on severity even if its borecore it can run quite happily for many thousands of miles allowing you to budget a pot for the work to be done. there are options, have they said which cylinders are showing scoring you can either just have the scored one/s sorted of fix the bank of three or go for a full rebuild so it doesnt have to be the scarry 12k full rebuild that you read about on the internet. and thats worst case and it is borescore

keep us posted :thumb:

Alfaian sounds similar but mine is a less noisier.

Phil997 It's going in to main dealer next Tuesday will keep you posted

With scoring there is typically a pronounced toc-toc-toc sound from the drivers (UK) side of the engine, sooty left tailpipe, higher oil consumption.

There is a chance it could be something else...

Borescope involves removal of the plugs of each cylinder you want to look at and sticking the camera in (sort of) but that should give you an idea of the labour time involved, plus the interpretation of the pics.

Part of the problem is interpretation of borescope pics... make sure who does it knows what they are talking about.

Do you have a warranty?

Well I sincerely wish you good luck :thumb:

Was it a private purchase or dealer?

I only ask to see if a warranty of some sort is still active.

Do yourself a big favour and post the findings on here. You will get expert advice and might save you a few bob if you're on a tight budget.

No warranty and bought from a guy who only dealt with 911's but worked from home. the car had no problems when bought unless he somehow hid the noise for 6 months.
Will defo let you all know the outcome next week. Hopefully it will help other 911 owners. Fingers crossed.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE -

Sounds to me like as he's a trader you would have a good case to press him for reimbursement under Consumer Rights Act...

If it is scored bores, it would not have just happened in the last six months.

The info you get from the OPC remember wont give you options as they cant say things like use millers nano 10w50 etc ,but that will help prolong the outcome if it is worst case and if fingers crossed its not then using a thicker viscosity oil like Millers nano 10w50 in a 997 with over 60k miles is an essensial part of the risk minimalisation along with an LTT and not ragging it over 3000rpm until its fully up to temp. :thumb:

BORESCOPE :bandit:

Minor rattles from exhaust clamps/brackets dont help

Depends where you live mon brav
Then the folks on this will suggest experts to calm your fears

I WAS WORRIED RE BORE SCORE ETC - ruined my first year

posts of engine fails - mins a 2005 - no bore score - no ims scares

Wish you well :thumb:
