I'm going to call them tomorrow and ask a lot of questions and find out who the local Porsche specialist is that did the clutch, RMS and IMS. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive for me to go and see it so I want to know as much about the car as I can before making the trip.
I also noticed by zooming in on the open door photos some paint bubbling around the latches. Is this common and could it be a sign of possible larger rust problems?

It's common on the earlier 996s, there's no gasket between the latch and the body, it can be fixed and then make sure to use a latch gasket (VX/Audi part - I think someone has listed the part number on here before now) to stop it recurring

Looks like it could be a great starting point.

I'm viewing in my phone so not clear but I think there's the usual corrosion creeping out from under the drivers door catch? No biggie but you want a bit knocked off for that.

I'd also want to lower it and refurb the wheels back to silver but hey, that's the fun stuff.

More importantly you want to know if it's had rads and condensers, a clutch, suspension refurb, waterpump, low temp thermostat.

I'm not saying it should have had these as loads haven't but it'll give you any idea as to immediate work.

Judging by the ride height, lack of sports seats and it having the 4 spoke wheel, I'm pretty sure it won't have M030 (factory sports suspension) or 220 (limited slip diff).

No biggie as they'd be due for a refresh anyway. It's just a nice spec to have.

Price wise it could be a bit topendy if it's had very little of the above and given it's winter but at the same time try finding a good C2 manual coupe with less than 80k miles on.

I'd say well worth a look. :thumb:

ETA - door catch runs mentioned above while I typed.

Like Demort, I quite like arena red. Quite classy and looks lovely when detailed. But yes mechanical condition trumps all else. That what'll cost you the most if it goes wrong.

A bold colour but i like it , rather unusual .. at least in my kneck of the woods .

Wheels look like a recent refurb and i expect the interior has been conalised as its very Tight , no signs of the usual wear and tear .

Milage again is pretty low .

I expect the door latches have been adjusted hence the rust .. not a hard job to have that blown in though on both sides .

Its the engine / under the car that makes or breaks it though .. pretty on top doesnt mean its a gem so ppi before purchase is what i would always say .

Thanks guys for the comments.

I'm seeing it as a base to build a fast fun road car. So i'm thinking of Ohlins, Powerflex bushes and then GT geometry set up.

I actually like the colour :) I think it would look ok with a black bonnet, roof and engine cover. I've never been able to leave anything standard!

You had me onboard until your last sentence.

Each to their own though. Let us know how it goes. :thumb:

That's a great looking gen 1, love the colour, interior, wheels. As Dermot says if the important bits underneath and the engine check out thats a lovely looking car. I personally wouldn't be messing with the look, but you go for your life

That looks great value for a low mileage early 3.4. The pick of the bunch of 996 Carreras IMO, cable throttle no pasm no IMS bearing or bore score worries :D

As Alex alludes to, whenever selling a 996 the first question buyers ask is about the IMS bearing, hence why traders get them done.

The incidence of failure is really low, and a 3.4 had a stronger bearing than the later 3.6 so IMS bearing problems on a 3.4 are super super rare.

So likely it wasn't necessary to change the IMS bearing, however it isn't necessarily a bad thing as its likely any oil leaks will have been fixed in that area at the same time.

It's more likely that the bearing they replaced the good one with is going to cause more trouble. The mind boggles :?

I love that colour. Lowered slightly on turbo twists it'd look amazing!

Get it inspected and then get it bought!

Looks tidy enough, ask questions and deffo a ppi, if all good then why not get yourself what looks a bargain

Hey bud.

Looks reasonably tidy but as others have said, be careful to have a contingency for items which may need replacing due to age.

The colour is distinctive which could be a plus (down to taste) but the red and grey goes well together IMO.

Interior looks very clean with minimum wear/recent refresh.

Will it be a daily driver for you? If not, any items needing replacement could be done in order of priority and as you are able to spend.

Should be a sound investment with that mileage and you may be able to have a deal with the seller if you raise the points about corrosion and any other items you identify as not being up together.

An inspection would give peace of mind if you decide this is the one.

Buying from a dealer can have benefits with regards to failures and your rights as a consumer as against buying privately were there is pretty much no such assurances.

Good luck and let us all know if you pull the trigger :thumb:
