Looks like it''s clutch time...

Hi.

I'm in Surrey, just south on London.

I'd go to the nearest well thought of indy. True that maintaining a Porsche can be done DIY or by any backstreet garage etc BUT one day you will want to sell your 911 and that is when a solid service and maintenance history from respected Porsche specialists pays you dividends...

Ray Northway is not all that far and a great option in my opinion. Porsche owners travel all over the country to get to their fav indy...

So long as there's a vat invoice stating what work has been done, I'd be happy with buying the car and I'm the kinsd of guy who buys a 2nd hand 996.

I recommend 9e in Horley. Very happy with service, advice etc and I know my car is being cared for properly. Plus they have a nice selection of cars to look at while you wait.

Hi, yes I've used 9e once before. They are indeed very good. However they are a deal more expensive on the clutch replacement compared to D911.

Local Indy has just come in at £1,400 for clutch and flywheel alone. :frustrated:

Do any of them include anything beyond clutch?

I.e. do they check the IMS bearing for play or flip the seal. Will the change the RMS (£18 part) if its leaky? etc.

Worth getting the over gearbox brake pipe changed, as if it isn't rotten now it probably will be before the next clutch change. I'm doing mine in kunifer cupra nickel as at a few of the clips above the gearbox (invisible with the gb installed) it looks a bit dodgy.

You might not need a flywheel, if it is within spec as it might well be at 68k.

I kept the same flywheel on when I had mine changed at 103k as the play in it was minimal and within spec.

.....as well as my trusted mechanic telling me if it was his car, he'd be putting it back on.

A Porsche OPC quoted me an amusing £2800 for the clutch while mine was in for a major. I would have found it funny except they lost the cigarette lighter...

I've had two quotes for £950 inc vat from two well thought of indys near London (excluding flywheel) if that helps. Any decent mechanic ought to be able to do it for cheaper though - Im getting a specialist to do it so they can inspect the IMS bearing and pull the cover off it and do the RMS (which has a minor leak).

Well I'm glad I sold my V8 Vantage before it needed a clutch change... 3.5k at an Indy, without flywheel. Clutches can last as little as 15k miles too!

Mr Clutch wouldn't be top of my list. My reservation is unsubstantiated but that's it.

Whilst this happened a long time ago, my experience with Mr Clutch was far from smooth. They said changing the clutch on the car I had at the time was a 1 day job. Fine. They actually took 4 days to change it leaving me with no vehicle to get to work in. They said they had cross threaded a couple of gearbox bolts which they needed to drill/tap etc. which took time to resolve.

I collected the car, drove home and as I got out I thought I could smell burning. Rather than just walk off, I opened the bonnet to investigate and found some sound proofing or similar material was on fire as it hadnt been secured properly and was left resting against the hot exhaust manifold. After a bit of a panic I managed to rip the item which was on fire out, burning my hands in the process but saving my car from going up in flames.

I then had a bit of a look around and also found that a pipe hadnt been re-connected to the turbo causing the car to overboost dangerously and I found 2 gearbox bolts just lying in the bulk head. Presumably the ones they had said they had cross threaded. Rather than fix they had just left them out completely.

Needless to say I was not best pleased with this as my car was my pride and joy. So I went back to the local centre to speak to them and the Manager was exceptionally rude. He basically called me a liar and said they wouldn't do anything as it was their word against mine and I couldnt prove anything.

Amazed at the managers shocking attitude I contacted their head office & after several letters and calls with them, I just got exactly the same response. They believed their managers word over a customers.
