Wrong time to buy a Porsche?

991 et al,
Bought my first Porsche in mid October (2007 977.1 targa, x51 with 66k miles), to come home to a cold winter in Aberdeen with snow, ice and salt on the roads. I had a good drive over Glenshee before garaged, and washed. The Porka is now garage bound to keep it away from the salt and SORN'd. Ctek on the go. Started today first time but with a tappet noise, that went away once at full temp at idle. Have't heard that noise before what's that? 7 weeks since last start, new oil 1000miles ago.

Oil level is at max.

Lack of use?

I have some business travel so next start up is first week of Feb 2018, any recommendations or comments? Itching to drive it, thinking Austria road trip next summer 2018?

JB

Likely lack of use! See whether you get it after a run and starting the next day.

I think as said lack of use for 7 weeks, You could try using a thicker viscosity oil millers nano 10w50 it might leave a better reside in the engine between start ups. and its what Hartech reccomend as the flat6 doesnt retain residue very well when left especially if your using Porsche recommended Mobil 1 .

Mine has been SORN'd since 31July knowing I would be in the US in Aug /Sept.
On CTEK. Started once end of Sept - no tappet noise (oil circulated very quickly) and mine has OPC Mobil 1 but its only on 36k miles.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend you to change oil as suggested - lot of hassle for a parked up SORN'd car. I ran mine for over 40 mins, allowed fans to cut in, no steam from anywhere (as OPC do when its in for service). Operated sunroof - back and forth and tilt up/down. Operated PCM to get voltage and current through it and radio as well as CD player.

Opened boot whilst idling and listened - nothing untoward heard.
Operated all lights and electricals inc. Wipers and washers inc. headlamp wash.

Rolled back and forth onto road and drive (SORN'd hence not possible to take it for a run) but with gear engaged drove 20 yds up and down several times operating brakes to keep discs clean.

Due to repeat procedure end of January on a cold but dry day. On CTEK throughout.

I know others who leave them 6 months without starting them up.

I use a rule of thumb that if I start it, it has to run till it gets hot and up to temperature to make sure all condensation dries out before being stored again.

Your tappet noise is quite normal at start up for a few seconds as oil gets round and lubricates everything.

Fine and pretty normal for a few seconds, but to sound tappety until it got to full temp at idle? Is that really ok?

Could have been a sticking tapper that freed itself. There is no adjustment on these bucket tappets so he can try again a few weeks later and see if it happens again before deciding if he wants to put into a specialist for a fuller examination.

If he is new to Porsche, he may not be aware that they can sound rattle on start-up compared to other cars?

Thanks for that feedback. I'm new to Porsche but very familiar with engines, my guess it's one of the hydraulic tappets that's taking a while to adjust or fill up. Defo wasn't doing that before as I tune into those types of noises. Oil pressure was at max and a couple of revs to 3k and the tappet didn't shut up, but once the temp came up it went away and it sounded super smooth. It's not using any oil over 1000miles since service.

Just been checking forums for sticky tappets and there's lots of chat on that.

TBH I don't like starting cars to idle and just sit there, they should be driven to heat them up quickly, it's not just the engine, box, brakes etc. I'll wait for March/April before road tax it and drive it.

I'll keep an eye (ear) on it! I just want to drive it but the amount of salt and grit on the roads just now has kyboshed that. Just had another dusting of snow in Aberdeen, some roads are very slippy. My A4 Quattro 3.2 manual with snow tyres is ideal just now. I'll just have to be patient for spring.

There is mever a wrong time to buy a Porsche !!!

You will have the same dituation every winter when you stick it under wraps ....

Tappety noise .... get used to that ...

and a fair plume of oily smoke from your exhaust on first start up after a lay up...again , nowt to worry about ....

And graunchy noise from your brakes unless you have pccb's......

And ... make sure you have a ctek on ... or you will he buying batteries every year....

Apart from that ... drive , enjoy ...
