A whining noise has just appeared over the past few days and difficult to locate as it only happens when driving!

Any ideas at all?? :?:

Does it only happen when you drive with your Mrs in the car :dont know:

You need to pin point it to engine or drivetrain.

When driving at a speed that does it, dip the clutch and roll, whilst doing that, blip the throttle a few times. If the whine alters with the revs it's engine related. Could be auxiliaries, aux belt pulleys etc etc.

Other test, whilst traveling at a speed that does it, dip the clutch and roll. If the whine is still there and starts to change as the speed drops off, its drivetrain.

I'd hope for the former as the latter means diff bearings at best, no biggie, or gearbox bearings at worst, which is more involved and expensive.

Good luck. :thumb:

PS Sorry I forgot to mention wheel bearings. This whine will alter with roadspeed too. While doing it, lightly steer left to right and see if the tone alters as the weight transfers onto that side, then lightly pull on handbrake and see if it alters.

That would pin point side to side and front to back.

Or.... just pop in to your friendly mechanic who will recognise it instantly. There are loads of possibilities.

Thanks Marky!...think it's the latter...(wheel bearings) as it's constant when I'm out on the open road/motorway. I'm sure (and hoping) that's it's not engine related as there is no drop in performance at all.

Going to get the guys at Specialist cars in Malton to check it out after Christmas!

I thought this was going to be a harsher response. Well restrained. On that note, how do you tell if your dog or your wife loves you more? Lock them both im the boot for an hour or so and see which one is happier to see you when you open it again.

Does it go away when you dip the clutch whilst moving?

Got to be worth a probe with a stethoscope to check for water pump, alternator , idler etc before getting too gloomy about really expensive items.
When the water pump on our 987 started to let go it sounded so much like a wheel bearing at first i was convinced that it must be just that. However when I had a good listen with the scope it was clearly the pump plus a grumble from the idler. Frustrating as the previous owner had the pump replaced just 10k miles previously, so I had presumed initially that it would not be the pump.
