996 lower control arm diy replacement

Hello.

I am going to replace the lower control arms on my 996. Looks fairly straight forward and have a very experienced mechanic helping me.

However I need to order a ball joint splitter. Can anyone tell me what size the ball joints are? (If not I'll just measure them when I get home)

I'm not sure what size they are, but ball joint splitters are generally universal. I use a bog standard tuning fork type to split mine.
 
This has been asked before and i think the jaw width needs to be either 22 or 25 mm .. i tryed searching but cant find it .

i just use the snap on ball joint splitter .. tunning forks are fine but can damage the rubber boot so no good if you are refitting it .
 
Be prepared to cut the bolts off (especially on rear eccentric bolts, fronts likely OK).

Galvanic corrosion means the bolts seize into the bushes with no hope of extraction.

Some kind of cutting disc or reciprocal saw needed.

You will likely need a full geo setup afterwards.

You'll never get anywhere near the bolt with a grinder. You either need an air saw or one of these:

good opportunity to check all the pther arms out.

my rear upper link bushes were shot too

i had done rear track arms previous, so i did the forked arms too to make a complete set.

you can get non-genuine rear upper links now which brings the cost down, i used low mileage 997 arms.

I assumed you were doing the fronts rather than the rears. If you're doing the rears then I wish you luck. As others have said, the bolts sieze terribly. I used Cillit Bang to dissolve some of the corrosion before adding WD40 and cutting and heat and drills. Not fun.
 
It's ok, just time patience and a few good quality hacksaw blades.
