Any knack to getting gearstick trim back in place?

I have done this recently on our 986 after recovering the shifter with a fresh leather boot.

Make certain that the tangs from the plastic top with the shift pattern not only line up with the holes in the gaiter but also that the holes are actually line up with the gaps below and are also the correct size (I had to ease them open a little with a sharp blade) then one sharp tap right in the middle at the top should see it click satisfyingly into place.
