Hi , newbie here to this forum but have been an avid reader for last 12 months. A year ago I purchased a 996 C4 tip as a bucket list thing .I had owned 3 Porsche prev. Incl a 993 so loved the brand. I intended on purchase to do an IMS upgrade but after sampling a couple of indies the second one listened to the bearing and said go away and put 5k miles on the car and then bring it back . So I went away and despite moving house and finding in March that I had a 6.5cm tumour on my kidney which had to come out pronto , I managed to put 7k of mostly wonderful miles on the car . So on Thursday the local indie checked her again and no noise from the bearing. But they cut the oil filter open and found metal slivers ( very small ) in the filter and in the bottom of the filter housing a few larger ones. I have found a lab that can analyse the metals but my question for the forum is "What would be the potential source components for those slivers of metal ?"
Cost of analysis is £270.
Because said indie didn't do the first oil change (when I asked the first indie if they had kept the filter so I could look in it they said they had disposed of it.)
So latest indie thinks go and do another 1-2k and check again but listen for any strange noises from the engine !
Should I just change the IMS ? NOW !

Autofarm

First thanks both for the comments and advice .
Demort , you were right.
I went to 3 Specialists asked for quotes for a replacement IMS bearing together with their proposal / product and cost , what guarantee they offered and how many IMS replacements they had done.
Autofarm were middle on price , best on experience ( over 50 cars ) and one over 20k miles that they had taken the bearing out and it was performing ok.
They also were the only Specialist I tried that provided a warranty .
One specialist said stop driving the car immediately , one said drive the car for 1-2k miles and then check the filter again ,one said drive it to us but not thousands of miles.
Drove to Autofarm 111 miles and they took the bearing out and with video coverage showed me that it was failing big time , almost completely collapsed.
They said they have never seen a bearing so close to complete failure .
They then sent a further video when they had removed the sump showing lots of ground up bearing bits in the bottom of the sump.
Now they have to flush the engine a couple of times to remove the debris from the engine . I am hopeful they will save the engine.
If people are interested I will see if Autofarm are OK to show the videos.
Not sure how to post them yet or if you can do it on here.

I'd be interested to see it they're ok with it. Upload it to YouTube and stick a link up 👍🏼😎
