As far as I know it was a 3.6 and only thing that was changed was the cable ends.

What was the reason you were told the 3.6 wouldn't fit?

Few weeks ago when i was ringing around im sure it was sports and classic that said it was different and also a Porsche specialist near me said the same so dident question it.

Theres was a gearbox on ebay that the seller said was in good working order apart from bearing noise.
So put in a cheeky low offer and its been excepted.
So my plan now is to pick it up and send it off to Sports & classic to rebuild the bearings witch they have at a set price on there website.
Figured at £250 it was worth a punt as im looking at £3000+ to do my own box.

Interesting. I know the cable ends were replaced on mine to later style and previous owner said it was a 2nd hand 3.6 box that was fitted.

Is there a part number etc that I could look for to confirm?

Also did you speak to Sports and Classic as again previous owner of my car had there box doen there and was IIRC quoted around £4500 to fix his and it was a noisy bearing.

I was just going by the prices on there website atm. Have phoned them but they haven't got back to me yet.

Update, Manged to find a second hand box at a fair price so have had all the bearings replaced locally before its fitted.

Should have the car back from paint in a week or to, So its all coming together slowly.

Just the exhausts left on the list.

Haden't paid any money to the other cowboy firm btw.

I hope the secondhand box solution is the right one for you. Once the box is dismantled, and parts are measured for wear within tolerance, at some of the mileages of these older cars, there can be additional items in addition to the bearings that are needed. I hope your rebuilder checked it all over such as dog teeth, synchros etc.

I concur with another poster that Mike at Sports & Classic is the go-to guy as he probably rebuilds more of these boxes than any indy in this country - in fact several indys send their customers gearboxes to him for rebuilds!

Gearbox itself is fine just needed new planetary gears and had the bearing changed while it was apart.
Was suprised how much they were worn considering the car the box came from had only done 60k.
Sports and classic are probably the best but also the most expensive around to.
Ive got a guarantee on the work that's been done so im happy enough with that.
