This is a somewhat silly project that has started to take on a life of it's own, so I thought I'd try to assemble all the information in one place should anyone else wish to add factory option M509 to their 996.

This is the diagram showing a 996 sport seat and the bracket, cradle and associated fixings:

817-15.gif

And this is an (incomplete) parts list:
999 141 028 02 x 3 = screws to mount metal bracket to seat frame
996 521 674 00 (LHD) or 996 521 673 00 (RHD) x 1 = metal mounting bracket
900 067 137 02 x 2 screws to mount extinguisher cradle to metal bracket
900 151 027 02 x 2 washers for the above screws
996 521 607 00 x 1 Plastic red cradle to hold extinguisher

What is missing from this list is identified as part 17 on the diagram - you'll need two of these, they're little metal clips that are threaded, and are needed in order to attach the cradle to the bracket.

Always fun getting your order in a thousand small plastic bags:

And here's the expensive part:

37281206924_6fbf272141_b.jpg

Which, when you receive it, you'll note is a Mercedes-Benz part:

This is important, and will help later!

Here's the bracket that fits to the seat, with the Torx headed bolts in place:

They're T25 for reference:

The cradle is retained by both a hook and some bolts:

Said bolts should locate/fasten into 2xpart 17 from the exploded diagram, which currently I don't have:

Now that's not the annoyance which it could have been, as we now encounter a somewhat larger problem:

*****.

It turns out that the 996 was specified with a 1.3 litre fire extinguisher - and that this unit is now NLA.

Here's an example (that I've ordered, as I may have a disorder):

Ignore the sites that tell you that the 1kg unit will work, as they are fibbing (although they have their part 17's, damn them):

So what to do? Well, if you recall, we found that the cradle is a Mere part, so lets see if there's something from the Merc catalogue that fits the 1kg unit (Porsche changed the type of bracket/cradle interface when they moved to the 1kg units in the 997, so they won't work for us).

Possibly, is the answer:

My understanding is that this continues to use the hook+two bolts fixing method, so should mount onto the bracket that fits the 996 seats.

So I've ordered this:

Purely for the cradle - I have a brand new 1kg extinguisher.

I'll report back when it arrives and I find out whether my studying of Google images was accurate (and it works!) or wasn't (and it doesn't).

excellent :thumb:

Yes brilliant.

Pure, obsessive Porsche nerdyness, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Exactly what I subscribe too. :thumb:

I was all set to follow your lead on these but will have to wait and see if it will mount to those bucket seats I've bought.

Great info for people.

Will only mount to bucket seats if your using the original Porsche runners.

Failing that you will need an aftermarket solution

Yep thanks Crash, that's what I'd read. I have both options there so just need to see what effect they have on seating height when I get around to fitting them.
A fire extinguisher is a sensible mod for me personally as I had a car go up once. Luckily I had one then and got away with no major damage.

I did mention that I might have a disorder - you chaps should bear that in mind before reading the rest of this post.

So! I have been (somewhat) busy using a variety of classified add sites - first time I've bought something from Russia, but it went very smoothly.

I now have four (4) cradles, two specific to the 1.3 litre extinguisher which is NLA (the new one came with said NLA extinguisher) and two that are specific to the still-available 1 litre units.

Here are the two that work with fire extinguishers that you can buy today (for very little):

They're both from Mercedes - based on what Google translate made of the adverts.

These cradles came with fittings, and you can see that Mercedes specified a screw with a conical head which matches the profile of both the washer and the cradle:

So I'd ignore the Porsche part list I put in the first post - I'll create a more accurate list when I have confirmation on part numbers and so forth.

This is the metal bracket which fits to a Mercedes seat - you can see that the tab which retains the cradle is identical to the Porsche bracket, as is the location of the tabs - and the metal clips which fit over the tabs and provide a thread for the screws to locate in.

(Please forgive the rather blurry photographs!)

What does this mean? It means that the all the cradles will fit onto the Porsche bracket, as it's a standard fitting shared with Mercedes - and likely others.

Here's a 1 litre Gloria extinguisher in one of the newer cradles:

26558176409_f593062fc9_b.jpg

Here you can see the mounting method of the cradle to the bracket - note the retaining tab, the two screws - exactly the same as the Porsche parts:

38277512746_f2fe3d8148_b.jpg

Here's the '90's extinguisher that fits in the OEM 996.1 cradle:

38277584596_edcb2f1539_b.jpg

As you can see, it's taller, wider than the 1kg unit that replaced it, and now fits perfectly in the cradle:

38301448102_390d857472_b.jpg

So I have some options here - I can use the older (OEM correct) one, or the newer, but still OEM (just not wholly Porsche OEM) version with the 1kg units.

The 1.3kg extinguisher shows as full on the little gauge - but it's old, so I don't trust it.

What that means is I'll use the 1kg units that are in date, I suspect - but the 1.3kg unit can go on the shelf in the garage.

Next job is to fit the whole assembly to a seat - something that's likely to happen in a couple of weeks as I'm travelling for a most of the rest of November.

Why am I loving this post so much?

In over 45 years of motoring I have never needed a fire extinguisher in anything but a racecar.

But now, strangely, I am strongly drawn to totally needing one :eh!:

Nice work fella - now how about you do a 997 version!

I think the whole post is actually a subliminal advert for Swiss Tools 🤣🤣🤣.

Hah! That isn't intentional- but they do make very nice tools.

I suspect you can probably order the 997 parts straight from Porsche, which rather takes away a degree of the enjoyment.

Think mine would be an easier fit for any Porsche, supplied with my .2 GT3 it's 2kg and could be bought from OPC's
