Diff swapping / rebuild?

I'm guessing that you'd need specialist equipment to set up a diff rebuild properly. I'd also guess that a rebuild would be a better option than buying an unknown scrap car replacement that may also have wear and tear.

For pricing ask a good Indy. Try Mike at Sports & Classic. He does diff work as well as gearbox rebuilds. I'm guessing it ain't going to be cheap though.
Depending on mileage (that you don't mention in the post) there may well be a lot of other wear n tear items that need replacement - and Porsche have put up the prices of many of their gearbox and diff parts.

I had a similar thought and emailed Guard Transmissions in the USA. Here was their reply:

Hello James,

Thank you for your interest in our products. We do make a kit to rebuild your GKN LSD. It runs $1800 and is comprised of replacement clutches and 40/60 ramp pressure rings similar to what one would find in a Cup Car. The parts are in stock. I would expect shipping to be around $100.

Obviously you then need to factor in labour costs etc.

Or of course there is Wavetrac or Quaife. Both of those are Torsen type diffs rather than LSD plate type.

Cheers James

So once import duty etc is taken into account it's probably about £1800!!

How difficult is it swapping out diff's on a C2?

Also has anyone rebuilt their factory diff, if so who did it and how much?

Are you talking standard factory diff. or LSD? My standard factory munched the internal gears. Had it rebuilt with new gears and bearings. Not a big job - I did a thread on it on here.......somewhere.

Long story short I'm looking at a car that had a noisy box with factory LSD.
It's been replaced with a lower mileage box with STD diff it seems. LSD is still in old box so wondered about rebuild then swap into new box.

Should be easy enough if the person doing it knows what they're doing.

I removed my diff once with the car on axle stands and it was reasonable easy. I have also stripped down an LSD which is easy too as long as everything goes back as it should, the worst thing would be torquing the crown wheel bolts back up as it's hard to mount the diff securely enough to get enough torque onto the bolt without it moving, there is a special tool for this. You will have seen the thread I started above which has some good info in it.
