My cars going in for a full repaint in the next couple of weeks and ive been thinking of welding up the sunroof.
Has anyone ever done this and how would do you think it would effect the value of the car?
If its not causing you any problems like leaks or noise etc then why do you want to remove it. Expect it would be a fairly involved process, what with trying to get new headlining etc installed, plus you have the then redundant buttons on the roof pod. In normal driving can't see it making any noticeable affect on rigidity or weight distribution either - maybe so if its going to be a serious track car etc. Another issue is the welding process - on a flat panel like the roof they will have to be really careful to avoid any heat distortion, although is they are any good that should be fairly straightforward. As to effect on value - only thing I would consider is that the "classic" car scene loves originality so might be a negative to some buyers looking for a factory spec car.
Other than that, its your car so whatever suits you. Mine has a sunroof and it's staying by the way.
I was just thinking out loud and as the car is being painted.
Hadent thought about the button pod on the roof.
Its not leaking but does seem to produce some wind noise.
It's entirely doable if you are committed
- will need to purchase a factory GT3 non-sunroof roof skin, headliner and dome light unit/surround (All the internals transfer over)....
The centre roof panel is spot welded in along the "channels" in the roof - old one would need to be drilled out, new panel spot welded in....
Still wont be cheap.
A non-sunroof car looks arguably sleeker and apparently saves ~13kg out of the highest point of the car
(most of the rattles and noise in my car emanate from the sunroof)
ela and isysman have both had their roofs changed so they would be probably be the ones to ask although they have both had a fair bit else done at their chosen body shops so probably are on best mate terms lol with discount hopefully
i look forward to hearing what you find out as its way down on my priority list but i have a sunroof and one of the "making a more driver focused car" plans is a as per what ela has done a carbon roof panel, carbon ducktail and bonnet
although thats as far as i'll go
ELA did the job himself. Brave man but I believe it's similar work to what he does for a living. I had mine done at a specialist who do work for Porsche. It's not cheap, will cost about 3-4 grand if you're paying others. Or about £2k for parts.
As a less expensive option there is a carbon fibre infill panel that you can buy to fill the hole once the original sunroof and gubbins has been removed.
It will obviously be much lighter and could be sprayed the same colour as the car, a new roof lining would be required to cover up inside.
Not as nice as a CF roof but you get what you pay for,
or you could live with the sunroof and save even more money!
