PDK Clutch slip

My OPC is trying to get technical help on this one, but I thought I would see if this issue is known to anyone on here.

Situation: cruising along 2250 rpm in 7th. Accelerate to load up the transmission and every two or three seconds there is a momentary increase in revs, say to 2450 then back onto 2250, both audible and seen on rev counter. No change in the drive itself. If conditions are right, it is possible to hear an audible scraping sound when this happens. It seems that the clutch is momentarily slipping. It does it most in low rev, high torque situations. This has been happening over the last few weeks.

The OPC changed the clutch oil a month or so back, and today completed a 'soft' synchronisation programme to try and improve the gear change. This is a lot better, but the clutch slip (if that is what it is) remains as before.

Low oil pressure, a faulty valve pack, a number of suggestions have been made. The OPC has to follow a diagnostic programme set by Porsche and it does not seem to include addressing this type of fault. Before I get to the 'replace the gearbox' stage I am trying to find out if there is relevant PDK knowledge and expertise out there somewhere. Any thoughts and guidance would be appreciated.

Hi John, whilst Porsche are doing their level best to help you by their own admission they never open the boxes to work on them.
So my advice would be to find a gearbox specialist, firstly their field is gearboxes and that only and they will have a reputation to protect.
So on that note I did a bit of clicking and came up with this company Austrin Gearbox Specialists and guess where they are, Newcastle u Tyne.
Their number is 0191 266 5540, you can but ask.
Nick

If the car is under Porsche warranty and they are acknowledging that the behaviour is not normal then I guess you leave it with them until they reach the end of the diagnostics, then they will ask Porsche if they can replace the whole unit.

I'm pretty sure the car is out of warranty.

I wasn't sure, but taking it to an OPC with a PDK issue made me think it might be given their propensity to replace rather than fix

Thanks guys.

Nick - I had a very useful conversation with Austrin and have tentatively booked it in for them to look at next Friday 18th. They were open and said that even if they can identify the problem, there is vey limited parts availability from Porsche. (They also suggested that the fault may lie with another linked system, such as ABS)

Lofi, the car has done 60,000 miles and is out of warranty so I will have to pay whatever it takes to get it fixed. I can accept that and want the car back to full health. It will be easier to take it if I can understand what is wrong and needs fixing.

I will continue working through the local OPC. They have been very helpful and I hope they are able to come up with some answers and a solution. but they are constrained by Porsche policies which seem to favour replacement rather than diagnosis. This is frustrating for their technicians as well. Meantime, I am getting a bit concerned about the euro trip planned for September. Keeping the (Porsche) faith for now.

Great update - good luck

So I have a Nissan GTR and they had dual clutch issues which turned out to be sticking solenoids and end float on gears needing reforcing.

the first people to sort out some of the issues was https://www.dodsonmotorsport.com/ and they list repairs for Porsche's. I know they are in Aus but several of the independents repair the T/M Litchfields speedtech etc both have Porsche's on there list

I had one of the first GTR's in the UK (direct JDM import) I had a issue but the fix was clean a solenoid and some circlips for £300 cheaper than 12K Nissan wanted!

the tech is the same, Porsche did the PDK quicker to compete with nissan and other cars coming to market with dual clutch T/M

Thanks Robbie. I went up to see Austrin last Friday. They were very helpful and able to see the issue on their diagnostic readout. The problem affects the 1,3,5,7 gear shaft and the oil pressure on that is very high, the thought being that it is compensating for an internal leak within the valve chest. So I am going into the OPC to have a discussion and get that ordered. If that is not the solution then we have to move on to the clutch pack.

I have mailed Dodson to see if they do the clutch kit for the 987 installation. Apparently the clutch is designed as a sealed unit within the gearbox and Porsche will only supply the whole thing. The Dodson solution turns it into a separately replaceable item and certainly looks a great way forward. That would have to be done by Austrin or another independent as Porsche will not allow their dealers to strip boxes in any way.

Some progress anyway.

what you describe is just how Nissan was with me. I met the Japanese manager of the T/M at the ring on a sponsored event. I told him I had repaired the T/M and he said I must not and return it to him as it was not allowed to be repaired! The guy in charge of the GTR was listening and laughed, his translator (attractive female personal assistant) told us he said customers are like this outside Japan and it was good to him to learn how we were. Nissan wanted to track problems but in the UK we were repairing them even if under warranty as it was quicker than dealing with Nissan.

Dodson has a good rep and will give good advice if you get to talk to them. Its not cheap but it will be uprated after and cheaper than a new box... might be worth a cheap flight to save on import duty with mini holiday
