Exhaust retaining strap

Whilst out enjoying some open top motoring today I heard a graunching sound from the rear of the car. On pulling over and expecting something quite dramatic to be dragging on the ground I found that what I assume is a retaining strap for for the near side exhaust box was hanging, apparently still connected, down to the ground. I jury rigged holding it up and drove home.

I am no mechanic but can do simple things although I haven't yet done anything on the Targa. Question is, how critical is the retaining strap and how easy is a diy fix?

Any help, much appreciated.

Thanks

Edit: so now the engine has cooled down I have managed to wiggle the retaining strap off and it is indeed broken having rusted through at the top. My next question is how critical is this strap? Should I expect the exhaust to drop without it? Should I stop driving the car until it is fixed?

Nasty surprise that must have been.

The muffler is a big heavy lump even if it has been RSR'd and the strap is designed to take all the weight. If the strap is broken (it will be the tensioning bolt device that has gone I imagine) then only the exhaust header is holding it up. The header is not designed to take that much strain so I would advise not driving anymore until it is fixed.
The strap can only be purchased as a complete assembly and can I believe be changed from below without taking the rear PU off.
However - I've only done it with the PU off and then it is a piece of cake.
Someone will soon be along to contradict me

If you've not had the PU off now may be an ideal time as you'll probably find all sorts of rusty bits that need to be changed #bumpersupports
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I think the bumper supports have been done fairly recently but you're right it might be worth having the PU off and having a look. I'll stop driving it until it's sorted.

Had a quick look but cannot find any links on "how to" remove the rear PU, can anyone point me in the right direction?

The strap was under £40 from Porsche. Drove my car to Kwik Fit. One of the fitters had it on in less than 10 mins. Car was on their lift so good access. No need to remove PU.

Contrary to what's been said above, the strap does not take the weight of the muffler - but it does stop it from bouncing off its mounting hook.

Either way, I wouldn't want to be running without the strap for very long...

One thing I would add, is to get a genuine Porsche replacement and not be tempted by the JP Dansk one - I've got one of each (car came like that) and there's no comparison.

Thanks.

Design 911 show a Dansk one for £19 and £63 for the Porsche OEM one, not surprised there's no comparison!

You are of course correct. Had forgotten about the hook

When I had mine apart the bracket the muffler hooks on to and the strap passes through was slightly loose and was the cause of an annoying vibration that one of the local specialists who claims to be oh so clever had caused in the first place and then failed to diagnose.
Overtightening the strap is another popular error that causes premature muffler demise.

There are a few designs of strap, some of the aftermarket ones are rubbish. Get a genuine Porsche one and find some long allen set screws or bolts and nuts in good quality stainless. Allen head are much easier to get aligned.

Yes I'd also recommend the Porsche strap, I had to replace one of mine, oh and the actual hanger.

I had the unfortunate scenario where the mufflers themselves were also in poor condition, rusty and holed in places. Had to buy a new pair from Gert (RSR'd of course).

As mentioned above, of your exhaust strap got to the stage where it rotted through chances are you will have a decent amount of remediation work to do under there. Bumper supports, impact bars, heat shields and should I even mention chassis legs

Hi,

I removed my rear PU earlier this year to do the cam chain cover gaskets along with the camshaft cover gaskets. I've attached a couple of pics of the LHS and RHS hangers so you can have a good idea what you are looking at. Below is a link from a old member on here of how to remove the PU plus other stuff. Hope you find it useful, it's a good DIY and a rewarding one if you go ahead. If you Goggle Porsche 993 rear PU removal you will find other links too.
