I expect this has been done to death (apologies), but would you be put off by a car that had a clutch change at around 60k, but did not have IMS change at that point. Car has 94k now.

Would you budget for having this replaced as part of planned preventative maintenance?

Hi Simon
No expert but I believe the general feeling is if you get past 80k there is not a lot to worry about, it's a good un.
I'll just wait to get shot down

I'd be put off by a car that had its ims bearing yanked at a clutch change. If its got past 50k then its not going to fail.....and when you get a 996, don't f*** about changing the bearing, just have it checked when you have access and remove the outer seal when you discover it's fine :thumb:

IMS

My 2001 996 had over 60k miles on, when I bought it, and I decided to change the ims for peace of mind. My indy called me in and the ims was breaking up, metal shards from the bearings. Just caught in time. This was the dual row bearing that some say is safe!! Some people are clueless. Its a no brainer to change for peace of mind.

You're right - some folk are clueless

Speak to Hartech about the number of cars they get in with failed replacement ims bearings. Replacing an ims bearing in a 996 is no guarantee unless you modify to the very latter 997 one which is much larger and can only be done on an engine rebuild.

mmmm problem is there's no right or wrong. There are very good arguments from Specialists in this field to leave alone with the mileage you have , and then there are the cases like lone ranger. So its then falls to how you feel . If you want the peace of mind its done spend the 1k and get it done. Otherwise fall in with the theory it will be fine if it hasn't gone at the mileage your at.
Its a difficult one spent 1k that you may never have needed to or don't and maybe end up with a very expensive rebuild only you can decide which you prefer. There are 2 camps on this subject so your never going to get a definitive answer . So your going to have to do whichever you feel suits you personally. Not the answer you were hoping for I know but the facts lol. If you havent brought the car yet then I would be 100% factoring the 1k into my offer if its private sale or non specialist trade and if its specialist trade get them to do it and provide evidence. :thumb: :thumb: The other option is to give it a miss and find one that makes you comfortable. Or have a good chat with Baz or Grant at Hartech before making any decisions

Like I said - speak to Hartech about people who've 'had it done' then gone crying to them when it's gone pop.

If you want peaco of mind - don't buy a 911.

Its a bit like guess the length of a piece of string...

My 2p, wait till you need a replacement clutch which won't be long now... Then have bearing 'felt' for play and decide but either way remove the outer dust shield.

Mine was original but had the shield removed when inspected and also some play so I replaced it in situ at 120k (mucho's care needed) but engine will fail for other reasons past 120k (oval bores, worn out main bearings, failed dual mass flywheel, worn out valve seats, bore score, timing chain snap) so I wouldn't worry too much about it in the grand scheme given the mileage it's got on it now.

Also do you know for sure its not had the dust shield mod or even been replaced in the cars life??

Very good point Alex as they all have their potential issues and some are unlucky and experience them, But their are far more people who really enjoy these cars and never have any of these issues. Any of the known potential problems with these cars the ones that fail are in the minority compared to these cars that never suffer these issues. :thumb:

IMS

Its a totally personal decision, but understand that NOBODY can guarantee that it will NOT fail. That's rubbish. I have had 2 996s and replaced ims on both. The 2001 car was about to let loose, and the cost of ims replacement was the best money I ever spent, dodging an imminent rebuild. I am giving you my personal experiences on my cars. Your decision, good luck whatever you decide.

There's been not one single 9o6 ims bearing failure reported on this forum in over 2 years but about 4 997 failures in that period.

I'd be more concerned about bore scoring on a 996 C4s.

Opinions are free, and there is no come back, I am with Lone Ranger, there are no guarantees! - You pay your money, you take your chances.

No guarantees with a replacement either so what's the point. If you've been told an 'upgrade' is bomb-proof, you've been lied to.

I think Harv nails the lowest risk/highest value approach - when you next have cause to be in there pull the cover, check the status of the bearing, if it's on the way out then change it, if it's not then pull the bearing shield, but let the sleeping dog lie and button everything back up with the original bearing still in place.
