trust me .. these days " I " have heart failure at the OPC,s quotes !

Aww btw Phil .. my avatar , i changed it .. a bit over the top or acceptable ? .. i wasnt sure if haveing Mechanic was a good idear or not as it seems a bit pretentious .

i think the part time pirate full time mechanic image suits you just fine Iain :floor:

Ha Har me heartys thats no lie.

All hands on deck and ring that bell
I,ll be taking your car .. your wallet as well
To the OPC you should have run
Cause at the indy,s then youll have no fun
For a car to be fixed on the straight and narrow
Then the OPC,s wont cleave your marrow.

Tis the indys life for me !

Blimey a technician and a poet .  very good ditty Iain or was it a shanty :thumb:

Phil997: Up this part of Cheshire and even across the border into West Yorkshire, the indys charge the same labour rate as OPC Modern Classics rate of £75/hr + VAT = £90/hr. So a careful assessment is beneficial before deciding who to give the job to - especially if parts are to be OE supplied by OPC. Some may charge £70/hr + VAT making negligible saving.

Whether anybody who is an Indy Porsche Specialist will charge £50/hr + VAT down South is likely to be challenging to find (in my view).

With the maths assessment the choice is down to each individual.

Yes I agree and most indy's down here are pretty much the same price wise which is why I use the Fully time served at Bournemouth OPC mobile tech as he can be hundred of pounds cheaper on the heavy labour jobs , his advantage of course is if a job does not need full workshop facilities he doesnt have those high costs to carry and add to the bill we all pay. So wins all round , he can access a workshop if a job requires that again the advantage is he is only paying a day rate for the use of those facilities.
but everyone wants something a bit different with any work carried out so what suits one may not suit another, but its always good to be armed with all the options and that's where this Forum is so useful because you ask a question and get a number of different options from members allowing you the choice to suit what you need personally.
Some want a job with a good price point , others are happier to pay more and get coffee and mags to read and others must have an OPC do the work immaterial of the premium on the cost. as you say we all are very different.
The important thing is that hopefully armed with views from members the OP wont get ripped off whatever he decides to do. :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks chaps, labour rate in quote is £90/hour as guessed previously.

I've asked Phil's guy and a couple of others for quotes so we'll see who's best on the cost/convenience front.

Phil

So perhaps I should start another thread but I need new front pipes the indy said they are dripping and its going to cost about £500, more part cost than labour? whats the options for the mobile mechanic will he come to Twickenham?

Phil

Ive just been through all this, mine went in for both front Coolant cross over pipes behind the front wheels, one was weeping and one badly corroded

the garage removed these with out needing to remove suspension (saves a full wheel alinement) then things snow balled the other end was gone as well and then the undertrays came off and the famous coolant pipe that runs down the middle of the car and up and over the engine was leaking!

So in the end All pipes were done (they where pretty horrid)

my car had done 60k and it was service time so while the engine was out it had a major service, the IMS leak (new seal) done the clutch inspected (then replaced) and the flywheel in then end. Plugs, brake fluid, transmission fluid, Poly belt. a heat shield and some other small items.. its shocking how much these cars corrode.

My garage where great! labour rate £60+VAT they are slow but very detailed in their work and my car is like new! but its was a little over £4k  it just seemed a total false economy to have the engine out and not do these other jobs as its saves a duplication of about 10hrs labour.

cars now perfect and will be good for years to come.

Luckily mine had a new clutch etc. about 10k miles ago when the engine was rebuilt so most of this stuff is already done.

Another quote back from Phil's guy at £2,221 and I'd have to take the car to Portsmouth so that's a non-starter - just waiting on a more local Indy to see where they are at.

Thanks again for all the advice chaps!

Phil

So that's the mobile tech out? Who are you left with and their estimates? (Dont name them but just indicate of specialist or OPC).

A few years back a member on here from NW bought a 996 Turbo from a dealer in Kent and had an inspection by an indy called La Rose in Sevenoaks and he dealt with a lady there. They appeared (to him) to know what they were doing.

maybe worth considering an estimate from this outfit? You are spoilt for choice for OPC's in that SE corner of England. Not sure how many of them offer fixed price servicing and the Modern Classics Rates.

Robbie , worth giving him a call mate as he often goes to London for jobs I will PM you his info.
I was talking to him today as he was refitting my painted centre console, He did say that for jobs that can be done without the need for workshop facilities eg ramps etc he is always very very competitive but when he needs to cover the cost of using full workshop facilities he is usually cheaper but not by such a large number. So then location ease of getting to etc does have a bearing on who we would then use for the work.
In most cases he can do any work I need without a ramp so I use him a lot. :thumb:

So here's a thought the indy that identified the issue was their quote about £2500 was that inc or not inc vat, So if you took off the £780 for the tandem pump off and supplied your own pierburg unit from autodoc at £299 the labour is only an hour to do the pump and to be honest less than that with the engine dropped so you could get their quote to around 2k by doing that option. :?:

Final quotes were:

First Indy - £2,486
Mobile tech on his ramp - £2,221
Second Indy - £3,711

The first Indy have 3 hours labour for the tandem pump despite the engine being on the bench at this point so I'm going to ring them next week and see if there is any wiggle room. If I can get it down to £2k we're in business, if not I may get the Tandem pump done by a mechanic friend and just talk about the other bits as has been suggested.

All the advice has been much appreciated guys.

I was going to get a photo of my actual pipes but they're above the under trays and they've been waxoyl'd apparently which should help in the short term.

Cheers!

Phil

:thumb: Sounds like a good plan Phil , keep us posted  :thumb:

Just to close this one off - holidays etc. got in the way and I had another car to use so the 911 didn't end up going in until Monday this week.

I ended up calling Precision and chipping them down to £2,300 but in the end some bits were easier and some harder and the bill came to £2,493 inclusive of 1.8% credit card surcharge which was slightly annoying.

The difference is noticeable, presumably mostly due to the new engine mounts as it's much smoother, and the peace of mind that everything is now done is priceless of course.

Ended up as coolant pipes and new coolant, tandem pump, brake pipes around the engine, new brake fluid, a diff seal, two engine mounts, oil change and new gearbox oil.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Phil

Good to hear you got it all sorted now . just a bit of acf50 sprayed around the underside avoiding the discs to protect it all and then just leaves some driving fun to be had. :thumb:
