996 for Sale in Scotland - Help needed

Hi everyone. As a newbie here I am calling on your collective knowledge and possible goodwill!

I'm on the hunt for my first 996, but had a disappointing weekend looking at 3 cars of all which were poor despite being described as being in good condition. They were in the £16-18k price range so perhaps my expectations of how good a car I could find for my budget was unrealistic - I hope not!

I've seen a car for sale privately, but its north of Aberdeen and I'm in Bedfordshire! I could hop on a plane, but after my recent disappointment want to be fairly confident before doing so. Can anyone vouch for a someone that could do a PPI in that area? Alternatively a friendly forum member who might be able to do a quick viewing to see if its worth me flying up. I would gladly offer someone a few quid or donation to their chosen charity as a thank you.

Of course I could post a link to the ad here but am a little reticent to do so - I'm sure you can understand why! I'm sure you could find the ad yourself with little detective work anyway

Anyway I hope my posting doesn't across too cheeky and hope that I might be able to reciprocate in helping a fellow forum member in the future

Just make the trip and look yourself it's only going to cost £100 and that's nothing when your spending near 20 grand. I almost drove 6 hours just to look at turbo

The only specialist in the Aberdeen area is the Porsche Centre in Aberdeen.

Can you give a more specific location?

I will be in Peterhead this time next week if that helps..... :dont know:

Its in Huntley.

A quick Google found Bavaria Autowerke and Peter Vardy, but anyone heard of them or used them? Would the OPC do a PPI on an older car such as this? If so is this likely to be pricey?

I appreciate Porsche ownership isn't going to be cheap and cost of flying up is modest in comparison to the cost of the car, but just trying to come up with the best cost effective solution to something that is a rather speculative proposition.

Unless your a mechanic with access to a ramp/pit etc I can't see the point in travelling up. Yes if it's a glaringly obvious dog then walk away but how do you check under body, exhaust, brakes, etc etc by just seeing it on a driveway.
If you got an inspection done and they said it's okay then you can travel up pretty much sure your going to buy it.
If you go up and think it's okay, then get the inspection done and find a problem then you've wasted time and money.
If it were me, inspection then buy not the other way round.
I'd call Bavaria and see what they'll charge you, they may even know the car.

My ideal 996 came up in Inverness last May and I'm based in London.

I hopped on a flight the very day, fell in love with the car and thoroughly liked the seller so I put a deposit down and had the car transported to London with no PPI.

Fortunately for me - only consumables needed changing so I was (only) hit with a £2.5k bill in day 1 but the borescope could have tested positive and it may have been a very very poor decision of mine.

I found it very tricky to find an indie PPI up in Scotland. The Aberdeen OPC is probably your best bet.

I know what it's like though - when you think you've found your dream car, you think the whole world is after it too!

Good luck.... patience is a virtue!

Greggy , you right to not post the info on the open forum as lots of lurkers , I suggest you pick a couple of members that you think might be able to offer advice and PM them . most on here would be happy to give you their thoughts if you did that.
good luck with the search :thumb:

That's the annoying thing about someone selling a bad example as they don't care about the condition cause the internet told them it's worth £21,000

Huntly will be a 2 hour round trip for the Porsche place in Aberdeen, and that's for the driving alone. Add the cost of the inspection and it will be very pricey.

Ricky Gauld is in Huntly, not a Porsche specialist but does have a good reputation.
Might be worth giving him a call or email.

Some more older info on him here.

So you know, I've not used the guy for about 30 years, when he was based closer to Aberdeen.
Not heard anything bad since though.

:yeah: In your position that's what I'd do.

You'll certainly get a yes/no as to whether it's worth you travelling. If it's a yes you could ask him to do a PPI and might be able to use his comments for a price negotiation.

Gentlemen your comments and sound advice is much appreciated. Gazc2, thanks for the offer. I think I might have a quick chat with Ricky Gauld then and see what he says :thumb:
