A friend has just purchased a 2003 996. Asked me about a whiring noise as he releases the clutch to pull away. It's an intermittent thing. Car has done 60,000 miles. Just want to put his mind at rest :)

double post sorry

Start the car and dip the clutch pedal a few times , you should hear the noise come and go .. pretty normal for it to be the clutch release bearing .. unless its very loud then i would say wait till it needs a clutch before replacing it .

A creaking noise and its going to be the release arm pivot , or sometimes the end of the slave cyl rod wears through leaveing metal on metal .

Thanks a lot, he's only had it a week. Think a call to the dealer would be a good idea then . :thumb:

60k miles and if still on original clutch it will be at or close to limits and approaching time to change. Consider a new flywheel also - wont be able to tell until the gearbox is out and the clutch is removed.

Didn't he detect it on the test drive?

If bought from garage take it back as it should be right.

Otherwise, a clutch release bearing can be noisy for a long time, and they can howl for a long time before failing. I wouldn't worry about replacing until the clutch needs doing.

If the clutch ain't slipping then unlikely the garage will replace the clutch. They would only really be liable for a £5 release bearing (they are a VW/Audi part).

As said though it would be a good time to bung a new clutch in as the labour cost is in gearbox removal. Also check flywheel play, and it would be worth removing the flywheel and check for RMS oil leaks and IMS bearing play while its in bits.

Sachs Clutch and LUK flywheel are OE manufacturers and available much cheaper than from Porsche.

996 clutches can last anywhere between 50k and 200k. They are as robust as any other car and life depends entirely on how its been driven. Mines on 130k with no record of a change, its fairly heavy but doesn't slip.
