The 'What went wrong with your 996 today?" thread

We'll these cars aren't getting any younger and they're most definitely past most cars life expectancy. At the moment I seem to be going through a "what's failed now" phase.

Got home from work today, went to put the drivers window up and that horrible crunch/munch sound came from inside the door. Stripped it all down and the regulator is absolutely mullered.

So, I'll start the ball rolling with:

Driver's side window regulator.

:nooo:

Probably best if i dont comment on this thread .. but to be fair .. i only see the broken ones and i do also see a lot of examples that still drive great and need very little work .

Mine's driving like a dream. Recent MOT - clean bill of health, recent major service - no advisories. 94,000 on a '99 TipS

To be fair not a lot, but I did take it for a run to Norfolk this weekend and it did seem to get quite warm in traffic, just past the '0' in the 80, not having used it a lot, I'm not sure if this is normal, but then it started to hesitate and spit a bit pulling away ( rather exciting when pulling into a roundabout, when it semi dies then picks up) When we got onto the open the open road it started flying again and was ok. Not sure if these two things are related. ihave a low temp thermostat and it sits just below 80 on the mway)

Anyone else get a spitty 996 in traffic?

The next day my 6 month old Merc went into limp mode for no reason, then cleared itself on restart, so nothing's perfect.

Regulator was done a couple of months ago for me, but the garage didn't adjust it right so now the window doesn't go all the way down.

I've got a bit of a downer on mine today - just picked it up from my local specialist with a bill that's nigh on £2k. :( Service, discs, pads, aircon recharge, PAS hose, inner and outer steering arms and resulting geo setup...

Not to mention the other stuff that they listed as advisories for the future.

Is it easier to list what's not wrong?? Figured today that I've done 9,000 miles since I bought the car and spent over £6k on servicing and repairs.

Sounds like they forgot to remove the "boxster pin" from the slider.

This stops the window going too far down (boxster glass is shorter than 996).

Whip the door card off and pull it out.

Tim that, as usual could be any number of things, plugs, cracked coil pack, etc etc. You'd need to either get it to your mechanic or start throwing parts at it. First option more sensible.
My car sometimes hunts a bit at idle when hot but to be honest I've loads of parts yet to go in so I'll wait until after that. Plugs, coil packs, LTT, etc.

Chin up Mr Scruff.

We are all in the same boat. These cars are at that age and they cost money to run and get back to or keep in tip top condition.

Your window is an easy fix. The regulator is for a Boxster and 996 but when fitting it to a 996 there's s wedge that needs to be removed so the window drops fully into the door. Your mechanic really should have known that.
Ask them to sort it. Only trouble is they'll disrupt the door membrane which costs £50 per door.

Like I say we're all in the same boat. I have a huge pile of parts both mechanical and cosmetic, but unfortunately I have very little time to use my car or tinker with it. I will have at some point though.
My wife bought a new Abarth 500 the other week and to be honest (and I'm no way saying it's better than a Porsche) it does make me wonder if I can be bothered crawling around fixing cars anymore. There's a lot to be said for a nice new car that just needs its weekly wash.

Anyway I'm rambling. :thumb:

Edited to add - Was beat me to it while I was typing.

Anyway in the spirit of the thread my key bust the other day. Died completely. No red light or anything. It starts the car still but the rest is dead.

There's a receipt in the history for £380 for 2 new keys from Porsche about 18 months ago. That's a really poor lifespan. Load o shoite. :x

Spoiler warning light came up on dash for first time on Sunday. I'm hoping its just the relays, but haven't had time to check yet. The manual up/down button doesn't work either.
Also noticed the AC wasn't very chilly.... do people really go to Halfords for a re-gas??? Is it that simple?

Yeah, know they should have removed the wedge - it was my local village garage that did it, rather than specialist so not something they'd probably have known.

Will get the door card off and sort it at some point, I installed Dynamat on the other door previously so need to do the drivers one anyway.

Still cross about the blasted thing though! :nooo: In between that, 40m of new fencing installed and a new car for Mrs. Scruff (old one still not sold) it's been an expensive month!

Mine also has a low temp stat and in traffic creeps up just past the 0. Normally it is just below the 8, so the same as yours.
The oil pressure is at about 2.5bar when at the lower temp and on tickover but dips to about 1.5 bar when at the higher mark. Sound about right? :dont know:

I'm with Bluebird and Steve, nothing has gone wrong recently.

Owned car for 2 years, big smile on my face every time I drive it.

Recent service and MOT (thanks Portiacraft) was £450. Runs beautifully, no advisories on the MOT.

Fingers crossed!!!

Panda996, this time last year my 997's air con appeared warmer than usual. Forum members suggested a regass. Wouldn't let Halfords near my P&J so took it to OPC. They diagnosed 2 leaking condensers so my estimated £98 bill turned into £1280!!!.

well at the ripe old age of 14 years and 4 months... the windscreen washer pump on mine packed up this weekend

I can live with that!
