GTS in for 6 year...and a whole lot more

Evening all,

Dropped my GTS in for the 6 year minor today and warranty renewal. Got the 111 report and the following noted;

Front wipers smearing screen - £64
Both heat shields corroded and require replacing - £568
6 exhaust flange nuts corroded - £318
NS steering rack boot heavily stained reqs steering rack replacing - £1584

Also got all discs and pads noted as red, rear disc inners have corroded and are breaking up (I have heard the dreaded noise from this). Front pads are at 50% but the discs lipped so saying they won't take new pads.

Really not sure what to do. I've been thinking of changing to either a 991.1 or a Macan (8 month old means I've done 500 miles since September '16). On top of the service and warranty, the above is well over £5k, but I love my 997 and feel as though it's worth holding onto. But can't help feeling that £300 for some nuts and £1,500 for a steering rack is excessive even for an OPC. I'm in the north west so sure an Indy would be a lot more competitive. Or just part-ex it as is but would be sad to see it go. Thoughts?

Hi Andy,

Would the steering rack not be covered under the OPC warranty?

Cheers
Mark

Am I right in thinking that you have to get any work done by OPC to preserve the warranty?

If not then get the work done at a specialist. Having said that it will still cost even at a specialist.

Opportunity for an Indy to evaluate maybe ? What do you want as opposed to Porsche wanting for next buyer ?

What's the point of having a Porsche warranty if they stiff you for parts!

Surely not £500 for the coil pack heat shields???

Work out the cost of the parts and then discuss the labour costs from an Indy to assess the viability. I reckon mine would do all those jobs for less than a grand.

Brakes and pads can be problematic if you don't buy OPC 'approved'. Having said that can they tell if you've fitted OEM parts when it comes to warranty assessment :dont know: They didn't on my Cayenne

Brakes/pads (unless there's a defect in the manufacture) are usually excluded from warranty in any event.

Majority is labour costs. A part might not be that expensive but how long does it take to remove old and replace?

Picked up a voicemail last night and the steering rack is covered under warranty, which is good news. Will discuss with an Indy relating to the rest, but as always am slightly nervous about voiding the warranty. Was expecting discs and pads all round, the other stuff not so much but somewhat offset by the steering rack now being covered under warranty.

Discs and pads is a standard going back to afn days! Easy to do expensive to replace.
What's wrong with the steering rack? Under warranty but??

That's a fairly bonkers list. I thought you were free to get it sorted where you like (to OEM standard) then OPC can't complain. As others have noted, a good indie will sort for far less.

Btw, if the heat shields are the coil pack ones, the part is about £20 each and made of old Kitcat wrapper foil!

The most expensive item (steering rack) is covered by warranty.
Seems like renewing the warranty is important to you.
If so, then consider biting the bullet and having all the other stuff done by OPC.
If you are in PCGB you can also get 10% discount on parts.

If its Stratstone in Wilmslow that is your OPC or Porsche Bolton (also Stratstone) then ask both to quote a best price on parts (10% discount) and labour. OPC Bolton may be more open to haggling. Wilmslow probably less likely unless you are going to spend a fortune (lot of wealthy people in that area who probably just see an invoice and pay it). Wilmslow will do discount on parts if PCGB with whom they have a good relationship.

As for part-ex, the cost to change will be considerably more than the cost to repair and renew the warranty.

But of course, its always your choice what you want to do.

I renewed the warranty on my 997.1 for years 3, 4 & 5 after the 2 yr new car warranty expired. OPC's have got you by the B***S. They always appeared to fine something that needed to be don which wasn't covered by the existing warranty that MUST be done before it can be extended. The mark up on parts (like the wipers in this case) was sickening.

Negotiate with the OPC. You should be able to knock a fair bit off that. Mine price matched an indy for clutch.
And buy and fit your own wipers ;)

If you use OEM parts they cannot void the warranty. I was paranoid about my warranty, so I used to get the parts from the OPC and fit them myself (they have no idea who fitted your heat shields etc) and keep the receipts etc.

As for the 997 GTS, it has to be a resounding keep it. Lovely cars!
