My 997 Carrera S progress..

Mark I have just read the whole thread , part of which I have read before , I must complement you on a very well kept diary and a lovely car. Did you ever get the dyno redone as you were disappointed at the results and fitted new coil packs etc. Keep the great reading coming :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks guys!

The weather is getting better so I will have it out again soon! I did briefly use it last week when I had no other option due to dropping another car off for some work. It does make me wonder why I have thoughts of selling it once I've been in it again.. It does do the job I need it to do perfectly well and ticks all the boxes, it's about time I get it on a track day to really see what it's about. I also need to get it serviced at the end of the month.

Phil, I did actually, it's on previous page here.

With the new coilpacks fitted and a new gasket on one of the cats, the car put down 356bhp which put my mind at total rest! Extra possible factors were new Michelin PS2's, the temperature was 5 degrees cooler and the car went straight on the dyno rather than sitting there for 2 hours waiting my turn.. Charlie said it would have been the exhaust gasket at fault. Either way, I was over the moon as I knew the car could do the numbers it should, he also said he didn't think he had seen a 997 do the book numbers. woop

As mentioned at the time, on the way home from the previous run, I had a few sprints with a friend in his DCT M3 and was able to get an edge on him every time... So who knows what the change came from, either way, it runs beautifully so I'm happy.

Enjoying this again now, taking it to the Nurburgring April 29th, I wasn't planning to but due to my MX5 Turbo rejecting a piston, this is next in line.

This morning I thought the car sounded a bit louder than normal, so I jumped underneath and noticed that both back boxes were blowing around the lower pipe, looks like the outer casing has come away, sprayed some soapy water around the joins and bubbles appeared, great. I'm probably just going to get them welded rather than replaced as the rest of the boxes are fine.

33988432441_420f3fcaca_z.jpg

Got my service counter showing now so I'll have it booked in with 9E for a major service after I return from Germany.

Backboxes repaired and while out, I thought I'd change the spark plugs again. I only replaced them coming up to 2 years now I think but while I have access and with a major service planned at 9E for next month, I figured I'd change the plugs to keep everything in line.

All plugs were the same condition and only having covered 1000 miles or so after my dyno results scared me, in perfect order but while out, I wanted to do a compression test. I have a basic tester and just wanted to know the condition for piece of mind.

I'm not sure what the values should be but I know they should all be consistent, which I'm over the moon to say they are. All readings were around 175psi cold, my gauge isn't the most accurate to read but none were lower than 172 and none higher than 177 so I'm happy with that! Ideally need to do a warm one and leak down but I don't think I'll bother as everything is fine, it was only out of curiosity while I was in there.

New tyre to replace one with a nail in and then I'm ready for the Nurburgring :D :) 8)

Recently returned from a 4 day trip to the Nurburgring where the car was great, a very comfortable and capable long distance car which carried luggage for 2 as well as big coats, crash helmets and various bits and pieces with no trouble.

I hadn't originally planned to use the car for this trip but due to my MX5 Turbo blowing up, this was the next in line, no bad thing and my girlfriend was pretty glad I wasn't doing the journey in the MX5 and secretly, I was too.

Due to the last min change of plans, I didn't have time to get one job which I would have had I known I was doing a long trip done and that was to have the front of the car wrapped in PPF, the front of the car is near on immaculate and chip free, some light ones have recently appeared but nothing major, which makes me want to keep it that way and care.. Due to no time, I had to improvise!

I had some low tack film from the days before PPF was a thing and I used to take my Golf show car to shows. It's pretty good as it clings on, offers enough protection and then simply peels off. While everyone else washed their cars, I didn't have to. :thumb: Looks crap but it hasn't shown up in any pictures friends took and saved the front end for the journey there.

Did actually bump into a UK plated 997 on the way but he couldn't care to crack a smile.

Just outside of Spa, final stop before reaching our destination

At our Guesthouse, great little place with family like hospitality and a fully stocked bar, playstations, pool table, darts and front room area, Gà¤stehaus Fuchsrà¶hre.

33687196924_175c53e778_z.jpg

After dumping stuff off, we all went out for a tourist lap, sadly this was our one and only lap as every other day the place was OVER busy and when it wasn't, it rained heavily which was very very very frustrating, more so for my mate who bought a Destination Nurburgrin trackday which he only did 3 slow laps on.

34529998265_75324b8858_z.jpg

Really frustrated with only doing 1 lap.

The next day, we thought we would do some site seeing to show some of the guys who had never been before some of the views, so we went to the Karussel, there was a serious crash so the track was closed for approx 2 hours so we had an hour or hanging about but it made for some good chat with others and some fence hoping.. Was quite cool being able to stand on the track here and get pictures..

34144436930_41ba0e3b4d_z.jpg

The track then opened and remained on the wrong side of the barrier to see cars absolutely nail it up the Karussel before stamping on the brakes to then go round. Was quite something to hear the abuse to the cars as they went round and the smell of brakes was probably slowly killing us. Got some great videos, GT3's, M3, Ferraris, McLarens, everything, all flying in and round.

Not long after going back to the guesthouse, with us all standing by the cars in the car park, to our shock, this pulls up!

34399791021_3404f34a81_z.jpg

2 guys get out and immediately say that they've had reports of a bunch of UK cars speeding, no one knew if this was serious or not until he said relax! Turns out they were at an annual conference in the Czech republic but always make a stop here on their way back.

Applied a sticker, 1 lap hero in this car but maybe I'll take it again

I took hundreds of pictures but here's some 997 content

For once, the 997 Carrera S was the rare car around, GT3's and Turbo's are common sight.. Actually brilliant to see them being used properly rather than rev'd off of the limiter cruising around london!

Total for trip, which was lower than any previous time, probably due to not venturing out much due to the weather.

34399952101_251ff5c4da_z.jpg

All in all, a great trip, probably my 14th or 15th time. Glad I got to take the 997 in the end as the MX5 would have been an experience in all the rain.
I have NEVER taken the 997 out in the rain, I like to only use my cars in the dry but I'm glad to report that it didn't melt or dissolve like I picture in my mind. Seems the roads are much cleaner over there and the car still looks fresh, only over here that cars just seem to get ruined after a drive in the rain. My girlfriend hates that I rarely use the car due to the weather but I may be more inclined to now, lets see. Just hate the cleaning effort required after.

The car was brilliant for the trip, no complaints, very capable of cruising and pressing on when needed, it managed 170 indicated mph at one point and could have easily gone more had I not needed to brake for an upcoming car.

As for the Nurburgring, you need to go if you haven't, a clean and pleasant place, if cars are your thing, you'll think you have died and gone to heaven. You will see every type of car in every form, being used! You'll meet great like minded people and enjoy great beer. Oh, you can drive round a track too!

Superb post. Thank for you for sharing your story, photos, and insights! Glad to hear the 911 did you proud, we expected nothing less! :thumb:

Nice write up Mark and looks like a great trip.
I have always enjoyed this thread.... thanks for sharing it all.

Mark great right up!! could you help? I've got a trip to monza booked later this year. I've just got the turbo paint looking how I want it and the temp film sounds a good idea to save stone chips. Any idea where I could get some?

Cheers

Great write up :thumb: There are some fantastic roads around that area too, have only ever been on my bike but hope to go there in the 911 in the near future!

Mark, sounds to me the 997 is getting under your skin :thumb:
I also stayed at the "Foxhole" on a trip a couple of years ago.
I also have an E46 M3 itch , but the 997 is going nowhere

Thanks guys, the car definitely did me proud, it really is a car that can do it all and it is suited to a trip like this just like a

The 'ring is a Porsche mecca, especially for the GT cars. I agree about the roads surrounding the 'ring, they're every bit as good, cambered hair pins, long straights, complex twists, all while being fully open and empty! You see some automotive pornography while you drive, an original rally spec Audi Quattro coming towards us being the most memorable.

The film I used is meant to be used for air brushing stencils, you can get different sizes and matt or gloss finish. It's cheap and literally sticks on and pulls off without risk of ripping your lacquer off or leaving any residue.

Annoyingly I didn't put it on for the trip home, the car was fine when looking at it on the train home but once I got home, I noticed a big chip which wasn't there when on the train, typical!

The E46 M3 is a great great car, I miss mine and am looking to get another before they're all dogs or over priced, manual this time however. For the money, nothing touches them for driver enjoyment.

430 random pictures from the trip but here's just some extras

Quite brisk, easily had more in it but ran out of free space

A wet and filled car park at the Destination Nurburgring track day.. Probably the most expensive parking ticket these guys had ever bought as it was far too wet to go around.

Oh, the new Museum. DO NOT GO HERE!!! The biggest waste of time and money EVER!! I hoped that I would learn something about the history of the ring but there is actually nothing to do with the ring in there.. Just some cars (not many!!) and cheap and non working displays, an embarrassment.

Photos of the best bits to save you the effort of going.

Planning to go back soon!

Thanks to Photobucket for ruining this thread and many others of mine on older projects!!!! I'll go about sorting this one when I've got a quiet day.

Been quiet recently, distractions!

After my 'ring trip, the car has not really been used but was overdue a service, as I had a great experience on the last service, I went back to 9E for a major service. I supplied Miller oil once again.

Service went well, just a seal on the fuel cap seems to be cracking so I need a new one of those, otherwise, one of the cleanest they've seen, they hadn't seen a 997 where someone has cleaned the underside before lol. I asked to see the oil filter and drain plug once removed and thankfully, crystal clear and was told no need to worry about this car. Phew, great service once again and the new showroom/garage is lovely!

Great stuff pal.

i paid a visit to the green hell earlier this year. Addictive place, share your love for the carrera :)

An all round great car, for blasting around for a lap, then doing 500 miles there and back.

Great road trip Mark - thanks for sharing the pictures. Both your 997 and your 964 are stunning, testament to the work you've put in. Keep the story coming.
