Well after much hassle and two batteries and two alternator s problem solved. Turns out the replacement remanufactured Lucas alternator had a dodgy V regulator that when above 1500 rpm or so pumped 18v into the battery. Nearly boiled the 2nd battery after driving 30 miles. 3rd battery in two months. New Bosch alternator and new battery and no more issues after 200 miles so far so good. Only thing now is to get the airbag light off...
It appears the first local garage never checked the alternator and the warranty company told them to fit the cheapest, an RTX but Lucas was supplied but with no markings. Credit to the selling garage as they helped out recovered the car and swapped out for a new Bosch alternator and new battery after hearing the hassles. Also fitted new rear bulb that had gone.
Lesson learned even for an apparently simple job don't use local garages, use someone with some experience and savvy on these cars.
