GTS Centre Lock Wheels

Hi, I'm Looking at getting a 991.2 GTS and I'm wondering if I order it with the standard centre lock wheels could what would I need to do to fit standard 5 bolt wheels on it at some point afterwards. I know I can order it with standard Carrera S 5 bolt alloys on it but that means I'd be stuck with them and couldn't go back to the centre lock type. I know I'm almost certainly in the minority's in preferring the 5 bolt type wheels over the centre locks (was thinking of Carrera classics).

Any one have any views on impact on future values if I ordered it with 5 bolt wheels instead of centre locks and I was thinking of full leather interior instead of alcantara. It would be a 2wd GTS manual and I'd spec the 18 way electric sports plus seats. I'd be looking to keep the car 5-6 years.

Appreciate views.

To switch from centre locks you would need to replace all 4 hubs along with wheel bearings and bolts. IIRC it is about £1.5k in parts and something like 11 hours of labour charges to do. Plus the alternate set of wheels of course. Going the other way is more expensive (due to the rather spendy CL wheel nut assembly and more expensive hubs. Even the CL centre caps are about £40 each).

It is too early to tell if the 991 GTS market will follow its 997 predecessor, but the centre locks are a sufficient inconvenience to live with (you have to either get the tools yourself or you have to use an OPC or good independent specialist to as much as change tyres with them) that there are if anything more buyers for non-CL 997 cars than the proportion of examples in the market: thus they certainly don't result in a discount (though they don't really command a premium either).

In short - you will probably be safe in terms of residuals whichever way you choose to go.

If going for the 5-bolt pattern, may i suggest the following option for the Carrera 991.2 cars:

I can fully recommend the 18 way Sport Plus seats, If you are of slim build you ready feel nested in to the seat thanks to the adjustable bolstering for your body and thighs. From watching various YouTube videos the 18 way Sport Plus seats provide more seat padding compared to the 4 way sport plus seats which will be an added benefit if you are opting for the sports suspension. Which I have found defiantly much firmer than the standard setup. You really find how poor the quality of UK roads are at the moment.

I also agreed with Disco the CL centre caps do limit your options and practicability. such if you want to switch to winter tyres, and needing a special torque wrench unless you go to your local Porsche dealership to have then swapped out. I know its a personal thing however I actually prefer the differing options you can have with the leather interior as compared with the black leather and alcantara.

When I configured my C4S 911.2 I selected the options which I would expect the GTS would have included such as the rear steering, sport exhaust the sport suspension the wider rear body, Sportdesign mirrors etc. I decided to go with the Carrera Sport wheels as they have a nice dish on the rears.

I love the look of the Turbo S CL wheels that are standard on the new 991 GTS - they are part of the GTS exclusive features like the leather/alcantara seats.
What do you need to remove and fit them other than a torque wrench? The socket to fit them is supplied with the car I think. While on the topic does anyone know the torque setting for them? I've got a GTS on order and I suspect my torque wrench won't go high enough, so I will get a new one.

IMHO, if I were looking for a GTS, there's two things would be top of the list, centre locks and Alcantara, there sort of what makes the GTS :worship:

Whatever you decide nice choice to have, 991 GTS just the business

All you need to remove your Central wheel bolts!

That is one mean torque wrench

You can do it with a torque multiplier instead of a mahoosive torque wrench (which is a tool with a planetary gear set inside it and a reaction bar to brace it and has the advantage of much more readily fitting in the car), but it is still a chunky and pricey tool and a reason why you would never trust a generic tyre fitter or non-specialist garage to as much as remove the wheels.

I take mine off with a Norbar 5:1 multiplier and a 750mm breaker bar and put them back on with a huge torque wrench rated to 700Nm. I also have a set of the reassuringly stable jackpoint stands in that video clip (there was a 911uk group buy to ship some over from the US a while back) as when you are putting that much force onto the car you don't want it supported with anything that could fail or be fallen off of.

Once you have the knowledge and equipment they aren't insurmountable, but if you don't they are fundamentally inconvenient and your car ultimately becomes more expensive to own. I've grown accustomed to them on my GT3, but they aren't something that I would recommend people to go for where they are optional unless you are really enamoured with the aesthetic of the wheels.

WOW

I was having the same sort of indecision over CL vs. 5-bolt but in the end went for the CL.

My reasoning was that a) it was an external part of the GTS package and only available on this model, b) I'd get new tyres put on by specialists and c) if I got a bad flat, then 5-bolt or CL it would be the AA/Porsche Assistance.

So far, so good and they are not difficult to clean with a mitt as they are mostly convex surfaces without bolt holes. I also think they suit the character of the car.

My dealer tried to stay neutral but when asked directly he said that most customers enquiring about buying .1 GTSs had CLs near the top of their 'want" lists.

I have the 18-ways and I find them very comfortable and adaptable. Did a 4hr journey with the Mrs. and no complaints. Also went with the leather interior (which I'm very happy with) as I'm not an Alcantara fan although YMMV...
