2010 Porsche 997 GT3

PostPosted: Thu Nov 17, 2016 9:47 am    Post subject: The new 911 RSR. It (erm) isn't really a 911 at all. Reply with quote

Now that the launch has happened and the usual suspects have started to read the press release (such as this nice run through at http://www.dailysportscar.com/2016/11/17/porsche-reveals-its-2017-gte-911-rsr.html) it is clear that the flagship racing 911 ... isn't. At all. At least not in any way but approximate general shape.

Mid engined (so not a 911 shell), wishbones all round (so no common suspension components nor indeed pickup points), magnesium gearbox housing, new engine which may or may not have some relation to the 9A1 family but certainly isn't the same as the road going RS, different body panels in entirety (even that vaguely 991 RS roof actually has an escape hatch in it), ... Even the front screen is heated so thus isn't shared with anything in the road car line up. It is by my reckoning significantly less 911 than even the 911 GT1-98.

Will they have to homologate this or do they have some kind of exemption. Otherwise, frankly, there must be a new not-911 911 on the horizon... Question

From Rennlist cup car forum

"The actual rules in GTE allow to optimize the position of the engine,” Walliser told Sportscar365. “No production car with this layout is planned and no waiver was granted.”

It's a shame there's no homologation requirement, as these could spawn an epic road car.

That said, all WEC machinery is so far removed from road cars they may as well be thought of in the same way as the old GT1 cars.

When you see them in pieces in the pits at Circuit de la Sarthe it is tough to find anything that even resembles a component from the road cars whose shape they loosely resemble in silhouette...
